I think the days of THS supremacy is nearing its end. Comparison between NX350h and Nissan Serena E-Power:
NX350h, 1810kg, 140kW 2.5L engine, 134kW motor, 20.9km/L WLTC
Nissan Serena E-Power, 1810kg 72kW 1.4L engine, 120kW motor, 21.6km/L WLTC
The E-Power system is able to keep up with THS-II with much less ICE and motor power in mid-acceleration tests, although in a drag race it would lose easily. It is 17% more efficient in city but 10% less efficient on highways.
THS still has better scalability for higher output levels, but I think for the 100-200kW class E-Power is now on-par with THS.
A less relevant comparison with Honda's e:HEV. But here it's a ZR-V that weighs much less (1580kg). It has a 104kW 2.0L engine and 135kW motor, rated at 22.1km/L WLTC.
The NX350h is only quicker at high speeds (above 120km/h) thanks to its much larger ICE, but below that THS-II was barely able to get better performance than competing systems using less powerful (and thus cheaper) components. I think with competent tuning Honda could get a lot more out of e:HEV.
