We all knew Toyota had the potential to leapfrog the BEV industry in no time. Glad it happened. It is very impressive the flexibility and ability to reaction, when proaction is considered the way to do things. Can't always be proactive, so being able to react is also still very important.

It seems lately every carmaker wants Toyota Fuel-cell tech.

First BMW , GM & Honda
Then Hyundai & Benz
Then VAG trucks
And now BYD!

because just as emission targets are pulled out of thin air rather than based on possible solutions, so are battery electric targets baseless.

elon musk also plays on people's ignorance. can't blame him, he runs a business and want it to be profitable, regardless of his philanthropic PR.

The 'insider knowledge' was confirmed by Toyota at its Recent shareholder meeting:

At the financial results briefing, Maeda also revealed that Toyota reduced development lead time for the “bZ4X”, an all-new BEV jointly developed with Subaru, by 30% compared to usual Toyota vehicles. Furthermore, according to him, the company is targeting 10% more reduction for future new BEVs.
BZ4X took only 4 years from conception to production which is about 70% of the normal 6 year development cycle for Toyota ICEVs.

makes sense, they still keep talking about a lot of BZ models by 2025, and (not) coincidentally this factory will go into operation from 2025.

problem they will have for sure is that by 2025 there will be a lot of competition, be that from existing manufacturers or from upstarts like Lucid and Rivian who will probably have more models within $40k range by then.

And probably lots of EV startups and traditional EV programs will have to be cancelled/scaled back now that EU is proposing carbon tax on battery manufacturing. The upcoming decade will also be about reducing the 'carbon deposit' of EVs.

EU has always been a very protectionist trade zone and this new tax is to effectively ban cheap batteries from China so all the battery jobs remain in EU. Also forces American and Japanese manufacturers to set up production locally.

Most of the industry's EV cost and profit estimates ignore any potential carbon tax in the future. The EV industry actually fears carbon tax more than the legacy auto industry because they have to pay the tax upfront. So will do whatever they can to lobby against it.

Kirk Kreifels says that Toyota is holding an event on EV's later this year. Some other youtubers have also said that there will be more information on the bZ4X before the end of fall.

Production actually started in China back in August. But we haven't seen any prototype mules on the road. Very high secrecy!

generally since i know it is a Toyota, and focus will be on different things, i dont have high hopes... but then again, Prime powertrain is impressive.
