When my family moved to the US on the 4th of July in 1992 (after leaving UK), my father, a busy physician, quickly started taping the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona back-to-back. Exactly 15 years after that, I rediscovered these tapes in high school and started uploading car commercials from them I loved as a kid and many other tapes I could find.
Unfortunately, a Lexus ad agency had them all taken down during the early days of Youtube's Content ID in 2007. I pray that doesn't happen again and hurt my 8-year old Youtube channel.
Here they are again:
1992 Lexus LS400 Commercial (Krew posted this ad in this article, back when I first uploaded it in 2007!)
In development from early 1984 to 1989, the "F-1" development programme was an astounding effort by Toyota. One hopes the 2017 LS matches, if not surpasses it comparatively. Lexus were not kidding when they predicted the future, as the LS400 was truly an "investment" and stood the test of time.
1992 Lexus ES300 Commercial
I know that LexFather will love this ad, as he had one of these rare early '90s Lexus specimens. When has a manual transmission Lexus, ever been so prominently displayed in a commercial outside of the 2002 IS300?
1993 Lexus GS300 Commercial
This commercial aired the same day, that the 1993 GS300 went into production on February 22, 1993! When I uploaded this in 2007, that info wasn't really out there. A few years ago, I caught this and find it interesting. The S140 GS was developed from 1987, just as Lexus was finalising the LS400 design. Alongside that in 1987, a rushed stopgap for an ES250 was drawn up, plans for its larger successor, and the Z30 SC coupe (given to Calty Design).
The GS was designed by Giorgetto Giugario between early 1988 and 1989, when the design was frozen, appearing in late 1991 as the Aristo.
1993 Lexus LS400 Commercial
By 1990, Lexus got to work on both updates to the UCF10/XF10 LS400 and a next generation model. As they launched updates midway in April 1991 for JDM (US for MY1992), in early 1991 changes to the first generation LS and Celsior were frozen for summer 1992 SOP.
Later that year, concept designs for the 1995 model year second generation were approved. While that was in progress, Lexus in August 1992 unveiled an updated LS400 for the 1993 model year, later going on sale that fall. It was the very first car in 1992, to offer a voice-activated colour touchscreen GPS navigation system and first Toyota product with a passenger side airbag. Toyota also pioneered the rearview camera in 1987, for a 1991 introduction. Now a U.S. NHTSA mandate.
Those changes truly made the UCF11 the best offering in the marketplace, especially for the price. I favour the styling of the 1992-1994 (1993-94 model years) LS more than the original, as it has a greater timeless appeal than the 1995-1997 LS. The first Lexus I ever sat in, was a white 1993 LS400, which my uncle still owns to this day alongside their 2013 LS600hL. A car that enamoured me from its "magic steering wheel" (auto tilt, telescoping) as a child.
This commercial above is one example from that era.
