New RAV4 and Wildlander are absolutely dominating the segment in China. Both variants cracked 10k sales in March. The two combined sold over 20k units.
At the same time Nissan sold 5200 Qashqai, VW sold 4900 Tiguan L, and Honda sold a paultry 2500 CR-V. This is the most dominating sales performance of any product in this extremely competitive segment.
Highlander is also on its way to dominate its own segment, with the old generation. Just imagine what they can do with four new models. We at first expected a lot of cannabalization between FAW and GAC, instead what happened is each performed well in their own territory (they divide up territories to minimize cannabalization) and take huge chunks of market share with the release of each new product. They are now forcing VW, Nissan, GM and Honda too sell their products at 30% discount, a Passat is now cheaper than the Corolla. What Toyota is doing is not designing two different products for two JVs (like VW and Honda does), instead it's just using its two partners to expand capacity at twice the rate.
