I think a recurring theme in the future will be base gas, base hybrid, power hybrid, and optional performance gas type of lineup.

it depends on the market - this will likely not happen in US for now, but it is definitely a strategy in Europe and I would assume in the future Japan.

China seems likely too.

Is there any weight figure? Wonder how GA-L holds up with mid large size application

official start of sales is 26th of June, so we should know everything soon... I did not see weight or power numbers anywhere so far, but maybe it escaped me if it was in Japanese and in images instead of text (so google couldnt autotranslate)

New crown advanced aging A handsome killer

On June 26, 2018, the 15 th generation new type crown will be announced / released.

Crown that has continued to lead the Japanese luxury car market since the first generation appeared in 1955. In recent years, however, the minivans and SUVs were deprived of the market, and the owner of the ownership has advanced. This new model seems to have taken bold rejuvenation measures to break the situation.

As a Japanese exclusive car, what kind of strategy is a crown developed for the Japanese people, and this one of the traditional famous cars is one of the strange resuscitations? Mr. Yoichiro Watanabe who checked carefully at the preliminary test ride held before the debut is analyzed with a special test drive movie.

Sentence: Yoichiro Watanabe Photo: Ikenouheira Masanobu
Video: Amada Photo Studio

I think that there are many readers who think that "Crown is the car that Ojisan rides". That recognition is no longer old. It is now "the car the old man rides". The average age of users reaches the age of 65 to 70.

If so, there is a high possibility that demand will decrease rapidly in the future, it became necessary to rejuvenate from 40 years old to 50 years old.

However, countermeasures for the aging of crown users is not a story that began now. In the eleventh generation (release is 1999), a sporty series athlete was established, and in the 12th generation (2003), the platform and mechanism were renewed with the name "zero crown".

In the 14th generation (2012) of the predecessor type, inheriting the platform from the zero crown, adopted a novel design that makes the front grille look bigger. We have taken various measures, but we can not stop the aging population.

As a different point of view, there is also a change in the senior senior market. Mercedes-Benz C / E class, BMW 3/5 series, etc. have gradually expanded their market share. There are many troubles in the crown.

So the new Crown reviews the car itself again. The previous full model change made commonality as appropriate so that conventional users can easily change, but the new type has a great degree of change.

In appearance, the method to make the front mask look bigger is the same as the predecessor type, but the lower side of the grille was stereoscopically strengthened the presence and freshness.

%E7%9C%9F%E6%AD%A3%E9%9D%A2.jpg

A new type of crown that is far from the image of the conventional crown (mainly "Royal"). Will it come out as good as you do?
■ Adopt design and form like European car
Body side has a greater degree of change.

The wheelbase (the distance between the front wheel and the rear wheel) was expanded by 70 mm from the pre-royal & athlete to 2920 mm. This causes the front wheels to protrude forward. The distance between the front door and the pedal and the front wheels widened by 70 mm, and the appearance became visible longer than before.

On the other hand, the rear part of the body is like a European car 5 door coupe, with the rear windows laid down and the trunk hood short. The design of "6 lights" which the window of the side of the body was divided into three is also a pattern many in European cars.

%E7%9C%9F%E6%A8%AA.jpg

"6 (six) light (= window)" adopted. The side windows are divided into three, and since the windows are six pieces together for both sides, this name has become (this is not the case "4 (Four) light")
Still the full width fits within 1,800 mm and the total length is 4910 mm, so it is about 15 mm extended. I changed the appearance without changing the traverse ability so much.

The interior also leaves the image of the predecessor type, the meter is large diameter and the switch of the air conditioner is arranged higher, so it is easy to operate. The monitor in the center of the instrument panel was mounted on the top and bottom, and the communication function was also improved.

%E3%82%A4%E3%83%B3%E3%83%8F%E3%82%9A%E3%83%8D.jpg

Although it seems that many new functions will be installed in the connected part, that announces it after June 26th. Nonetheless, following the predecessor type, the driver's seat pushed "ease of driving" to the front
The height of the armrest attached to the center of the front seat is suppressed compared to the predecessor type, and the left elbow hardly interferes even when the steering wheel is busy at the time of parking. The conventional type was also considered for users who are leaning against a large armrest and driving with a loose posture, but the new model ceased to do so.

Both in the front and rear seats, the supportability of the body improved compared to the predecessor type. Expansion of the wheel base was spared to push the front wheels forward, so the foot space at the rear seat is the same as that of the predecessor type, but the comfortable ride for four adults is comfortable.

■ Abolish the system of athlete, royal, Majesta
 The engine has an inline 4-cylinder 2L turbo, an in-line 4-cylinder 2.5L hybrid, and a V-6 cylinder 3.5L hybrid.

The grade composition changed dramatically. Since 1974 "royal saloon" has been set as a central grade, the new model abolishes this. There is a basic classification of B for corporations, B for buy-outs, which is price-saving for functions and equipment, a luxury-oriented G, and a sporty RS, each of which combines three types of engines (B is 2 L turbo only).

Price examined by Best Car Editorial Department at 6/10
Therefore, this time, we tried the prototype (prototype vehicle) in the closed course and checked the driving feeling of each engine.

■ The difference between the three types of onboard engines changes the nature of the car
First of all, the 2L turbo is an improved version of the type carried by the predecessor athlete. Converted into a naturally aspirated engine, it has performance comparable to that of 3.5 L, and demonstrates a driving force with a margin from the low revolution range. It is easy to drive and sporty. AT is 8th speed, the control at the time of shifting became smoother than the predecessor type.

The 2.5-liter hybrid is a new type that has been installed from camry. Compared with the 2L turbo, the power performance slightly drops, but the performance equivalent to 3L is provided. Since it is a hybrid of stepless speed change, the sense of acceleration is smooth and accompanies a sense of relaxation.

When stepping on the accelerator pedal deeply on an uphill road or the like, the engine speed first rises, and the speed increases so as to follow it. This movement is peculiar to the stepless speed change, which is accompanied by a slight sense of incongruity, but when running calmly, the noise is small and comfortable. It fits the image of a crown built for more than 60 years.

The 3.5 L hybrid is basically the same as the type that the Lexus LS / LC carries. Power performance is the highest among the three, sensuously comparable to 4.5 L. Blowing up is also active, and the stepped function of the 4th speed is built in and it operates as a real 10 speed shift, so you can drive sharply.

When sporty driving mode is set with sporty RS, it becomes control with heavy use of high revolution range and engine sound changes to thick tone quality. It sounds like equipped with a switching function in the exhaust system, but in fact it sounds a simulated sound from the speaker and I felt it was a childish effect not becoming a luxury car.

■ Adopted a common platform with Lexus
Next we will talk about running stability and ride comfort.

The platform of the new crown is common with Lexus LS / LC. Since the full width of the crown is 100 mm narrower than LS, it is impossible to make a complete common, but the basic construction is the same. It has versatility so that it can cope with various full widths from the development stage. Therefore, this platform is often used for Toyota's passenger car which adopts rear wheel drive to be released in the future.

G equipped with a 2.5 L hybrid is a grade equivalent to traditional royal saloon. The tire size was 17 inches (215/55 R 17), and the ride comfort was finished comfortably. The reaction to the steering is natural, and it also steepens when we turn the curve. Including the time to avoid danger, make the rear wheels more earthed, make the sedan more attractive with low center of gravity and high rigidity.

In the sporty RS, the tire size is 18 inch (225 / 45R18) regardless of the engine, and the suspension has a function to switch the damping force of the shock absorber.

■ The best grade is 2.5L hybrid ......
The basic character as well as the hybrid G places importance on the ground contact and stability of the rear wheels, but the RS is a bit agile in the sense of steering. It is easy to change the direction of the car, and when you are bending the curve, you feel stronger on the outside front wheel. The grip balance of the front and rear wheels is the same as G, but raised the curve bending performance.

Instead, the ride is slightly stiff and inferior to G. The coarse impression that the tire bounces finely on the road was suppressed, but in the low speed range it tends to convey the decoy bogo on the street.

It is a 3.5 liter hybrid that needs attention. Both the engine and the motor performance are high, and while wearing an 18 inch tire (there is no 16/17 inch in the 3.5 L hybrid equipped car), depending on the accelerator operation when the curve is bent, I feel the lack of tire grip. If you have a 3.5L hybrid, you will need to further raise the chassis performance.

Then the best grade is a 2.5 L Hybrid S / C package if you emphasize calmly and smoothly running. S is a well-balanced buy-in grade centering on practical functions, if you choose C package you can add safety equipment to cheap.

If you want to run sporty, recommend 2L turbo RS. Power performance is high, AT is 8 speed so there is sharpness. Adoption of a new platform increases the mounting rigidity of the suspension, ride comfort is a bit hard, but a sports sedan with superior safety and comfort.

Both grade prices fall within the first half of the 5 million yen range, equal to or less than Mercedes Benz C200 avant - garde (5.3 million yen) and BMW 320i sports (5.6 million yen). Given that the crown's body size and comfort are comparable to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the BMW 5 series, there is a possibility that it will be advantageous in terms of competition.

■ Explain the "new value" shown in the new crown more!
73.jpg

"For the Japanese" stuck with the new-type crown was 1800 mm in width, 4 golf bags in the trunk, holding feeling of the door knob and sinking condition of the cup holder, it seemed to be particular about the details
Because the new-type Crown discarded the traditional royal saloon and the appearance also evolved into a 5-door sports style, it seems that the traditional type of user who is said to have become aged is no longer being opponent.

I would like Toyota to explain the "new value" of the crown in an easy-to-understand manner to the market and to make great achievements.

Then using the know-how gained in Crown for other cars may give opportunities to expand sales to closed Japanese cars. Such a mission is also given to the crown that is the center of Toyota's and Japanese cars.

1710-1730kg with 2.0 L4 is consider heavy
the current GS350 with 3.5 V6 is around the same figure
Assume the next GS is adopting the same platform, there needs to be a 100kg weight saving on other parts to compensate.

Currently Japanese GS350 and GS 2.0t weight the same.

I would expect more aluminium on next GS, but it will also have more equipment and luxurious materials to counter that weight loss.

Preventive Safety Package Toyota Safety Sense

  • The second-generation preventive safety package Toyota Safety Sense comes as standard in all Crown models. Toyota Safety Sense includes
    • A pre-collision safety system that detects pedestrians (day and night) and bikes (day) to support collision prevention and mitigate damage
    • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with full-speed range that supports driving behind the car in front
    • Advanced driving assistance technology Lane Tracing Assist (LTA*7) that supports steering so cars remain centered in the same lane during use of Radar Cruise Control
    • Automatic High Beam (AHB*8) that changes between high beam and low beam headlights automatically
    • Adaptive High Beam System (AHS*9) that irradiates high beams without blinding preceding or oncoming cars
    • Road Sign Assist (RSA*10) that displays road signs recognized by the camera on the display so drivers do not miss road signs and drive safely
Parking support brakes (stationary objects, vehicles approaching from the rear, pedestrians in the rear)

  • Stationary objects such as walls and pillars, and vehicle and pedestrian traffic pose safety challenges in parking lots. Therefore, the new Crown is equipped with low-speed braking support systems. In addition to Intelligent Clearance Sonar and Rear Cross Traffic Auto Brake, the new Crown is also the first Toyota brand car mounted with rear pedestrian support brake*11, which detects pedestrians using a rear camera, and in the case of a possible collision, helps to minimizes damage by activating alerts and brake control.

The TC looks great , if Lexus or I should say when Lexus makes the new GS I am sure it will not look anything like the TC . Just maybe the platform, if anything . But I am sure the IS and the GS will come out in the same year with more horse power .

So the GS is still wider than Crown even though the Crown is WAY longer.

Is it because Japanese roads are narrow?

Back in 1989, before it was abolished, the Japanese Domestic Market Passenger Car Tax limit was 4.7 m length by 1.7 m width.
The Toyota Cressida [export name] or Mark II [JDM name] was just under this limit.
Today, the Mark X is slightly bigger.
The Crown is bigger still, though the Crown still has that limited width nearly 2.0" narrower than GS intended especially for the Japanese Domestic Market.

Even at a rather narrow 1800mm the Crown is a whale on Japanese roads. Anything wider than the 1700mm 'Compact Car' limit will struggle to maneuver.
