One point I lost in the shuffle of EVO’s Car of the Year showdown — the magazine named the Lexus LFA’s V10 the 2010 Engine of the Year (click for a larger version):
Some quotes:
There’s the noise [the LFA engine] makes, for a start, a dense shriek like a V10 F1 car’s, fired out of the exhausts with ever touch of the savagely responsive throttles (all ten of them, each one controlled by its own electronics)…LFA engineer Haruhiko Tanahashi has even measured the savagery: a stab on the accelerator will take the V10 from idle to 9000rpm in 0.6sec…
There won’t be many LFAs, but it’s hard to imagine that such an engine’s career will be over when all the LFAs are built, given the love that has gone into it. We certainly hope not.
It’s great to see the LFA (and its development) being rewarded with this kind of recognition, and have to agree with the article’s closing statement — I’m still holding out hope we see this engine in more cars, no matter how impractical it is.
