New Sports Models Debut This Week

New sports models will be announced this week on December 5 at 11 AM JST, or December 4 at 9 PM EST.
The wording in the press release is interesting as is the teaser image posted with it. Instead of referencing Lexus models, the cars are just referenced as “sports” models and the press event is being hosted by Toyota Motor Corporation.
Traditionally, Lexus press releases more directly reference Lexus but we know the car front and center will be branded as GR and called the GT per this teaser video. The car to the left is the...

Interesting, though, that Lexus would share the teaser. Could just be because the Lexus Sport Concept is in the photo, but why is darkened if we've already seen it? Maybe, Lexus is getting a production version of it revealed as well, and maybe, this is it and staying close to the concept.

Posted by Lexus, the conference is being held by Toyota. I hope there is clarity about what comes next for GR -- not just the GT but as the brand. This is certainly exciting, but parts of it are weird too.

The way I read BestCar's latest scoop (they seem to also be very confused about the branding): the V8 hybrid model is the GR GT, while "LFA II/LFR" is a BEV super car. The original plan was releasing the GR GT in 2025 and LFR in 2028. Since the GR GT was delayed by 2 years (delivery starts in 2027), the two models will debut together. I think this also means the LFR BEV program is actually ahead of schedule; they either made some breakthrough on solid-state batteries or fell back to the bipolar Li-ion battery option (which should debut next year).

I still think the Lexus model is 90% a BEV, but I'll be very happy to be proven wrong.

So I think there are several possibilities for this. I think the first reason why is because since GR will break off completely from Toyota, and be positioned as a slightly higher brand (albeit entirely focused on performance vehicles) it is expected to be sold at Lexus Dealers. There is also potential for Lexus F to be killed off and for it to be the Lexus GR GT (far less likely). Another/Additional possibility is that in this event they talk about what powertrains the Lexus supercar will be coming with. I honestly think it will come with a V8 hybrid. Anyways all shall be answered in a few days.

Will not buy the Lexus concept electric one, never, and it’s just a concept anyway. Hell, now GR (Toyota) is more exiting than any Lexus out there. Congrats Akido, Toyota killed the Lexus star. Sure he not said get rid of the Lexus, not the spindle grille?

You just did the Porsche thing, their customers don’t want any pure electric sports car’s either. ☹️
