Anyone who claims to commerialize a battery with an energy density an order of magnitude than the current Li-ion batteries should be taken with a metric ton of salt. UK isn't even a relevant region/nation when it comes to leading edge battery research. Most of the academic breakthroughs are happening in the United States and Asia.

Li-air research is still in its infancy, 2030 commercialization for any form of metal-air 'fuel cell' is grossly optimistic. Even the solid states need to wait until 2030 for wide spread adoption.

That's also the problem, 3 years from now should be a 2022 lauch as MY2023, is Toyota reckoning it's going to pay EU fines regarding Lexus fleet emissions?

Actually TMME today already satisfies those emission standards, which is why we did not get press release about European RAV4 PHEV - it won't be sold for now in Europe.

Lexus will be fine due to Toyota.
Their fleet averages are already the best due to hybrid tech, and penalty system will not be calculated with WLTP standards but something in between.

New CHR just got rated as 109g and 118g/100km CO2 which is a lot more than before.

I expect that's why new Yaris HSD might get bigger battery that enables it to travel longer in EV mode.

One interesting info. from GAC's report is that the Full-size SUV will have a motor with only 131kW or 175hp. Since this thing will most likely weigh well over 2 tons, how do they expect it to be drivable? Or could this number be the output of one motor and the SUV will use a dual-motor AWD setup for a combined 262kW/350hp (which sounds much more reasonable)?

表里的数据不一定准确,很显然,suv给的最大功率/最大扭矩和A25B-FXS一样。根据4线的建设速度,我觉得准确的消息或许会在明年北京车展公布。

他们确实经常在这些文件里故意掺杂错误信息以混淆媒体,我怀疑之前一丰泰达环评报告里亚洲龙PHV的产能都是乱写的。

They do have a history of deliberately putting false info about the product in their publically-released documents. The production capacity and specs could be all incorrect.

Shizhi is pointing out that the 'power output and torque' for the full-size SUV are exactly the same as the A25B-FXS engine. So it is possible these values are placeholders. We shall see more info during next year's Beijing Motor Show.

More updates on eTNGA. From a really old post on insideevs (sorry Ian), I recall someone did post about these electric motors offering modularity since it's much easier to offer combination of these motors (even if they only came in three to five varying specifications) than build engines for varying ICEVs. Of course, this won't be evident early on but will be as BEV becomes more mainstream.


New details have been revealed about the e-TNGA platform planned by Toyota for future battery-electric models. Toyota wants to cover different series based on the same platform – ranging from small electric cars with a range of 300 kilometres, up to larger electric SUVs with a range of 600 kilometres.

The purely electric platform will be based on the Toyota New Global Architecture, which is designed as a mixed platform – for example, the second generation of the Toyota Mirai will be based on the TNGA. However, the e-TNGA will specialise in electric drives and be particularly flexible within this area.

Project leader Koji Toyoshima told Automotive News that the new electric platform will support rear, front and four-wheel drive and will be suitable for small, medium and large vehicles. Battery sizes between 50 and 100 kWh are to be used, combined with two engine types with a power spectrum between 80 and 150 kW. Small electric cars will have a range of 300 km, larger ones between 500 and 600 km.

“What I proposed was a platform idea like a radio-controlled model car, where you have a battery, motor and chassis that can be combined to produce different types of vehicles,” said Toyoshima. “The parts of the car are all produced as modules.”

The Auto News report says that initially, the e-TNGA will use conventional lithium-ion cells. Toyota also continues to rely on solid-state cells, which the Japanese company hopes will provide lighter, more powerful and safer batteries. Next summer, Toyota will present its progress in solid-state cells at the Tokyo Olympics.

Please give it a proper price (not Tesla Model 3 Dual Motor with 75kWh price) and at least 62kWh Lexus... : )

They'll be putting out their first dedicated platform BEVs as jaguar and others hit their second generation if this is true. 2023 before we get a purpose built BEV?

Also makes me wonder about the idea that the LF1 is the new LX. Would they really wait until 2023 to put out the new LX? I can see that, but man, there's being late to the party, and then there's showing up two weeks after the day of the party.

At least they're moving in the right direction!

(Sorry Ian for the link, I know they are Tesla fan boys but at least they are talking positively about Toyota) Toyota is making me wait for the next gen BEV batteries. Fkin brilliant lol but I was going to really wait it out until 2025 or a little sooner because I have faith in Toyota / mankind for sheer ingenuity.


Toyota is well on its way with solid-state tech, but production is still far off.
Rather than revealing its upcoming solid-state battery-powered car at a major auto show, Toyota aims to take the cover off at the upcoming 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, which runs from Friday, July 24, 2020 – Sunday, August 9, 2020.

This information was recently provided to Autocar ahead of the Tokyo Motor Show by Toyota's Technology Chief Shigeki Terashi. He shared:

"We will produce a car with solid state batteries and unveil it to you in 2020, but mass production with solid state batteries will be a little later."

We've known for some time that the Japanese automaker was hard at work on solid-state battery tech. It seemed it was only a matter of time before something real would come to the forefront.

There's more positive news as well. Following the long wait, Toyota plans to employ the cutting-edge tech — providing smaller, cheaper, longer-range batteries that can charge faster — in its entire EV lineup in the future.

Interestingly, the solid-state vehicle that is set to be revealed at the 2020 Olympics is based on Toyota's e-Palette self-driving vehicle.

No sorry necessary. If this all works out and TMC has solid-state batteries shipping in 2024/2025 they should be in good shape since everything will have been designed around solid-state in the first place instead of adapting charge controllers and software originally intended for Li-ion.
