After Mazda's presentation of their Vision Coupe concept, I can't help think, "Geez, Lexus is really trying a little too hard with this LS+."

Sorry guys, but this was disappointing and I am annoyed.

Mazda has some nice looking cars, nothing wrong with a bit of competition between it and Toyota... I am little bit dissapointed with CX5 though - too small changes for all new model, it is going to look like everything else in a year, even though it is very beautiful vehicle.

I'd also suggest the LC is the better comparison to the Vision Coupe, because coupe and all.

Lexus LS+ Is A Concept Of The 2020 LS Facelift With Autonomous Tech

The Lexus LS+ Concept unveiled at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show is one of the most self-explanatory show cars you'll find.
expect from the LS once an updated version comes along in the not too distant future.

Based on Lexus' L-finesse design philosophy, the LS+ Concept features an evolved Spindle Grille with a large grille shutter that aids both cooling as well as overall aerodynamics. It also comes with laser headlights and taillights, as well as electronic side mirrors.

The overall aesthetics of the LS+ Concept aren't all that different to the current, all-new LS sedan. The shape of the car is basically the same, with minor alterations here and there that make the concept look more modern, if not futuristic.

Also, if Lexus decides to go with a long light strip at the back on a future LS, it would only be following in the footsteps of other luxury cars like the Panamera, Audi A8 or all-new A7 Sportback - which wouldn't be a bad thing since that car would then look arguably better than the current version.

On the go, the LS+ would rely heavily on its "Highway Teammate" automated driving technology, which is also due for release in 2020. These systems allow the car to respond to actual traffic conditions on motorways, enabling automated merging, lane changes and diverging, while making sure you stick to your lane and hold your position behind the car in front.

Wait a minute. This LS+ concept is oddly familiar. We had thought this to be the next design direction for Lexus back in mid-2016, in fact we were right. This rendering from early 2016 was based on what was believed to be the next generation GS-F. Look at how close the headlights are nearly 2 years, after it was made for a Japanese publication.

Just to make sure: you know that the LF-FC was based on the 5LS, and not vice-versa? Yes, the LF-FC was shown in public first, but it actually represents the future direction of the new LS, not a pruned branch of evolution.

As for this new concept, I love it with the * that the back end looks a little like an Art & Science Caddy gone wild. I've said before that I think Art & Science is sort of a spiritual ancestor of L-Finesse, but this is a bit too on-the-nose for me. Everything about the front end is terrific though.

Yes, the LF-FC was designed a few months after the VXFA50 LS back in 2014. Usually most Lexus concepts took less time in the past to develop. Nowadays, the nature of them requires more lead time for some sufficient engineering.

The LS design took when on schedule, 3 years to engineer from final body design to engineering sign-off. Toyoda-san delayed it by about 2-3 months. Look for me to provide photos and details of its 200B development story in 3 months time.

As for the LS+, looks like the LS-FC Concept trademark was renamed into this, probably because they realized it was redundant to showcase another fuel cell concept. Looks like I was right, even if not 100%! I called it!

This might also preview the next IS to a degree or Scott at BMW is an idiot, who shouldn't pass along false rumours. I mostly expected a high-tech LS concept and was proven right, even if misled a little by a BMW insider.

The front of the LS concept looks like a 370z's, and it looks just as small as a 370z. When lit in the demo video, the taillights remind me of Ford Fusion's.

One detail that really crystallized for me when I saw the still photo before you launch the Motor.es video are the flush oval exterior door handles. Once a staple of concept cars, they have now seen at least 3 production applications: Jaguar F-Type, Lexus LC and Range Rover Velar. I love how they tidy up the 5LS's side profile, and wish they would go into production as part of the 5LS's midlife refresh 3 years or so down the road. They would tie LS and LC styling a bit closer together.

Alas, I'm not getting my hopes up. From my understanding, such an undertaking would be second in cost and complexity only to a full change in the greenhouse as far as altering existing design. Much cheaper to tweak wheels, grille patterns and taillight inserts.

I still have to wonder what they were thinking when finishing up design work on this car 3-4 years ago and why they designed the LF-FC slightly differently from the VXFA50 LS 500. Then now you have this LS+ concept.

Back in February 2014, it was reported by that same BMW insider, that he saw Aichi HQ over a dozen brand new S-Class vehicles present for benchmarking reasons regarding the new LS. Plus, some other comments.

Likely when RHD W222 exports to Japan had just begun and when 200B was shifting into production development phase, which ended several months ago earlier this year.

BTW, there were interesting proposals for the X152 programme in regards to the door handles, back in 2010-11. A Corvette style door handle was thrown out, as it ruined the flush-mounted ideal by having a hole on the edge. Plus, the supplier was already a good choice.

Not sure why it wasn't done for this car.
