Again we see the power of value here. You can't get nearly as good SUV for this price in other brands. Auto journalists will make it lose every comparison test they put it in, yet it will still win in value for the average consumer.

That is Lexus' strength, and they need to keep this quality that started with the first gen LS. Even luxury/high end products need value, otherwise it just is rip-off.

Our loaded 2016 F sport was 62k and change. So a base 500h at 62k is a great price for a substantially better vehicle.

Nah. The majority will only be buying the entry RXs. There's no way in hell enthusiasts like us will go for the top end RX, especially when it's sitting next to an X5 at around the same starting price. You just can't beat the silky smooth B58 + ZF 8 spd.

I just looked at a base BMW X5 xdrive45e starts at 65k and adding m sport gets it to 68.5k with no options. I drove a new one (non m sport) for a week and MPG was outstanding but outside that it was uncomfortable and not roomy for the size and i drive was a PITA again. My team also wasn’t a fan. ai would hope the M Sport drives significantly better. That said compared to the 500h it is not just a hybrid but a plug in EV. 389 peak hp.

On paper so far, I would absolutely take an RX 500h over an X5 40i or 45e. I like the X5 a lot, but the upper level trims become pretty pricey. Comparably built, an X5 40i M Sport is $76k, so ~$10k more.

I think the 500h is worth it in the RX. If one can't afford it, there are better cheaper options from Toyota, and one would not get a SUV.

The real test if the RX 500h has good fuel economy and good performance ratio within a fair vehicle weight is to compare it to a V6/I6 turbo diesel SUV (Landcruiser is to big and heavy and a different class). The RX 500h should be compared to the BMW X5 xDrive40d and Mercedes GLE 400d. Comparing it to the X5 xDrive45e is pointless, because one is a HEV, the ther a PHEV. HEV and PHEV are not comparable spec for spec, because fuel consumption data is pointless.

PS: Yes, RX 500h should not have been called F Performance.
