Really interesting choice of flat-plane V8 for the S580. Even with a balance shaft it won't be as smooth as a cross-plane. Just doesn't make sense on the S-Class. "Faster throttle response" isn't really a main concern for S-Class owners especially when it has hybrid assist. I think it has something to do with emissions.

And it comes with a V12 option on Day 1. The Maybach isn't out yet but the armored S680 limousine still gets the V12.

Mind you the M279 is a dinosaur by today's standards. It's a SOHC 3 valve with port-only injection. It's "newer" than the 2UR but way less sophisticated (I'd say it's about the same as a 3UZ). But somehow Mercedes still gets 630PS and 1000N.m out of it while complying with Euro 7.
