Lexus has trademarked the LF-Z nameplate in Europe, a clear sign that a new concept vehicle is on the way. LF stands for Lexus Future, and has long been the standard naming convention for Lexus concepts.
There are various threads that can be pulled together in figuring out the LF-Z, starting with Lexus’ recent promise of a concept introducing the brand’s next-generation design direction. This was teased with the image above, as well as stylized glimpse of the rear deck lid:
Judging from the placement of the antenna and the broad rear deck, this concept has the shape of a crossover coupe, a vehicle segment that Lexus has yet to enter. One other tidbit concerning the concept — it’s going to be powered by a battery-electric powertrain.
This dovetails nicely into another recent trademark from Lexus, as they registered the RZ 450e nameplate in both North America and Europe late last year. Both trademarks share the letter Z, but it’s the R that’s more interesting — the two other Lexus vehicles to share the letter are a crossover and a coupe.
