Is this the new LFA? GR GT3 Concept Spied On Public Roads

After countless videos and photos from race tracks over the last year, CarScoops has captured the GR GT3 Concept on the road for the first time.

Here are a few shots of the car on the road, but be sure to head over to CarScoops to see all 23 photos in the gallery.

Rumors and speculation about a new Lexus supercar have been widespread over the last few years, so we can’t help but wonder, “Is this the new LFA… or not?”

With Lexus’ ambitions to be fully electric by 2030, does a fire-breathing, twin-turbo V8 supercar fit into the portfolio?

Would this car be one last hurrah for internal combustion, or might it not be a Lexus at all?

The GR GT3 Concept was branded as a GR vehicle – the first ever – at its introduction during the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon. Lexus, on the other hand, released their own Electrified Sport Concept in December 2021 at an announcement outlining the brand’s plans to go fully electric. Lexus was not bashful about the details: fully electric and packing solid state batteries, 0-60 in the low 2-second range, and 430 miles of range for the future supercar.

So is there a relationship between the GR GT3 Concept, the Lexus Electrified Sport Concept, and the LFA? If there was ever a love triangle to be apart of, it would be this one, but it seems we’ll have to wait a bit longer for answers.

They seem to be BBS FI-R wheels:

Why is Lexus continuing to get absolutely shafted if this is true. I don't see how Toyota plans to sell an exclusive 200k+ supercar.

Look at Century and Crown, and GR products vs. F Products as points of comparison.

Lexus is being repositioned into an electric sub brand project more than a global luxury brand on par with Mercedes, BMW, et al.

I think there are ways this can work for Lexus, but it's going to be very different from what we have known previously. The future is Toyota first with Lexus as an afterthought -- we're already living in that reality, but it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better.

My opinion is that as Japan has consolidated control and taken decision making power away from the regions, they're rolling out a more JDM-esque strategy across the globe where Crown is similar to Lexus and Century is above Lexus... so then, what really is the point of Lexus? It no longer fits into the traditional lineup of:
- Toyota: Mainstream
- Crown: Premium
- Century: Super Luxury
- GR: Motorsports and racing

The only way to keep Lexus relevant was to make it completely different: electric. However, what that means 10-15 years from now when most everything in the Toyota, Crown, and Century lineups are also electric? No idea. Lexus has been starved for resources and product while Toyota, Crown, Century, and GR have all been completely renewed and updated. I don't even think tea leaves are necessary - the writing is on the wall: The old Lexus, the one that brought all of us here in the first place, is dead.

To the point at hand, when the GR GT3 Concept was released, it didn't have a brand on the hood but it was released by "Toyota Gazoo Racing." There was a photo from a dealer meeting of it wearing a Lexus badge, and that was discussed at one point, but keep in mind the only car Lexus has ever publicly referenced as a follow up to the LFA is the Electrified Sport Concept -- never the GR GT3 Concept. The GR GT3 is a GR car. Whatever Lexus "LFA" comes next will be electric -- Lexus has explicitly stated that.

This is so dumb, so that presentation of Lexus products for the future was just a smoke show?

This is so incredibly shortsighted of Toyota, all of the other brands are rolling back their EV-only plans to make way for an ICE/EV split.

Man you really spilled all the beans huh? It's nice to speak freely now. Thanks Gecko. 😂😂

So there is no LFR? If this isn’t LFR, then what exactly is LFR? Or has this trademark already been canceled?
LFR is going to be the Electrified Sport Concept.

I think another reason that's causing this to happen is the larger Lexus models almost don't matter at all to the Japanese market, like the current Lexus model that's getting the most love from TMC is the tiny little LBX and its Morizo RR version, because that model is more relevant to the Japanese market than lets say an IS, or an RX or an LS.

From the 2021 announcement? Everything in the back row was "incremental generation" with some ICE, HEV, and PHEV, but I feel like it was clear the future is electric for Lexus.

Just my opinion on setting my enthusiasm aside and trying to look at so much of what has happened over the last 5 years or so. I guess it could all be different, but it feels like we've seen Toyota marching in this direction for a while. Plus rumors of Century coming to America, more than a few rumors of "ZC" replacing the IS, etc. Maybe I'm wrong 🤷‍♂️

Yes - agreed. In their home market where "GS" and "IS" and "LS," etc don't mean as much as they do elsewhere, it's much easier to let those names die.

The front row models.

But I guess those were purely design studies to show off their design studios skill. "this is what we're capable of designing.. but this is what you'll get" smh
