Lexus GS Sedan Not Going Anywhere, Will Continue Sales in North America

Lexus will continue to sell the GS sports sedan in North America for the foreseeable future, as confirmed with both Lexus USA and Lexus Canada.

“The Lexus GS has been an important part of the Lexus line-up since 1993 and we value its role as a sports sedan,” Lexus USA spokesperson Ed Hellwig explained over email. “We will continue to offer the GS in the United States, and will evaluate how best to meet our customers’ needs going forward.”

The future of the GS sports sedan was called into question recently when Lexus Europe discontinued the model due to new emission regulations. It will be replaced in the region by the new seventh-generation ES sedan.

Despite the promise of continued sales, there is no guarantee the GS will see a next-generation model. Lexus would not comment on future product plans.

The same old question holds: if new GS is almost ready, why haven't we seen any mules on the road?
Maybe I'm just being optimistic because I really want the GS to live. The Lexus ES is not a GS replacement - its not right to think it is.

I'm hoping for something like this: the Lexus GS is currently in development right now and test-cars/mules will hit the road in 2019 with an expected 2020 release for MY2021.
^This will gives it time for the 4G Lexus IS to take design ques from the Lexus GS (because the IS tends to copy the GS in design ques) which will make the 4G Lexus IS a MY2022. Following the 8 year life cycle of the 2G Lexus IS - the 3G Lexus IS will have its last model in 2021.

:pray::pray::pray::pray::pray::pray::pray: I hope.

^^^^^Also if there were GS mules running right now it would take the spotlight away from the 7ES.....so maybe Lexus is waiting a bit before they release anything new for the next generation GS...we'll have to wait and see....Please Lexus bring us the 5GS...

Agreed with Trexus - having a 5GS test car running around would possibly draw down the hype of the ES.
I really want the 5GS to live to. While I do not own one, I think the GS is an important car within the full-size luxury car sedan segment.

Agreed, spwolf, its definitely hard to say at this point. The end of EU-Spec GS could just mean the GS won't sell in Europe anymore but no one really knows. The Toyota has the Crown available so you can development the GS pretty quickly as well.
Everyone is just hoping as of right now. Rumors could show up later this year or next year, hopefully.
A 5GS release in 2020 for MY2021 prior to the 4G IS release in 2021 for MY2022 wouldn't be a farfetched idea considering it'll allow time for the ES to settle in and then the IS can follow the 8 year life cycle of 2G IS.

Having had a look at ES again, other than RWD handling and V8, the GS has nothing over the ES. It almost makes sense to have an only performance model of the GS, the GS F, hacked from bin parts.

I like to believe the 4GS had more than just RWD, handling and V8 over the 6ES.

The 4GS also had Triple LED headlights w/ turn signal (But they are hard to find in dealers), bigger screen, LFA Gauges, and etc... In short - the 4GS had the some extra luxurious and quality of material the 6ES didn't have on top of the RWD, handling and V8.

The main draw of the 6ES was that it was cheaper and roughly the same size as the 4GS. Its likely - the average consumer didn't care what the GS had to offer and went for something cheaper being that they are the same size. Someone on CL once said, the dealers also push the ES sales too since its cheaper and moves sales faster.

With lack of dealer push and the average consumer just getting the ES (for they see it as a cheaper GS but the size is almost the same), this became one of the reasons why GS tanked.

The 7ES in Ultra Luxury form seriously intrudes on the LS in terms of luxury features, although I assume that actually sitting in it you'll be able to tell where the extra $40,000 goes. At that point I think if there's a GS it needs to be only the GS F, no base model, no hybrid unless it's a GS Fh or something. Then bring on the LS F, LC F, and IS F and Lexus has a pretty compelling lineup.

To echo what @spwolf somewhat said, yes there will be a 2019 GS 350 and GS-F in U.S./Canada. The GS-F will stay in production a little longer, but the GS 350 is discontinued next year. There will only be a MY 2020 GS-F and MY2021. A new GA-L GS cannot be expected before CY2022. The only likely replacement is a 4-door offering in between the GA architecture LS and ES, with probably different nameplate. Isn't guaranteed though. Think about what happened with SC and LC, many years apart.

It would actually make more sense to treat it as a technology showcase car. We have rumors of next-gen Mirai based on GA-L. So Lexus could have a dedicated platform to test out autonomous driving, FC, EV, THS-R, and whatnot. The sedan market is a sinking ship at this point. Three is already a little bit too many for a brand.

All they need to do is to design a sleek 4 door coupe like profile inspired by LC/LS. Make it more emotional, dynamic, and visually appealing.
They really need to reposition the GS into something that is more inspirational to justify its sporty character from the ES.
Only in this way can they gain more sales and become successful.
