Video: Explaining the New Lexus LC 500h Hybrid Transmission

A new video from Lexus UK provides critical insight into the new dual automatic/CVT transmission that will be used in the upcoming LC 500h hybrid coupe:

If this transmission lives up to its promise of improving the Lexus hybrid driving experience, it will be a huge advancement for the brand — according to Automotive News, Lexus engineers are already looking at new applications for the hybrid transmission:

The transmission design may be used in other Lexus cars. “We are already preparing for some other engine variations,” [LC Chief Engineer Koji] Sato said.

Lexus officials declined to elaborate on specifics, but Lexus’ product cycle suggests it would make sense to use the transmission on future hybrid variants of the LS full-size sedan and GS midsize sedan.

A new LS hybrid would be a potential match for the gearbox. The next LS is due to go on sale in 2017 as a 2018 model.
