Lexus IS 200t Turbo Prototype Spotted in Colorado?

A camouflaged Lexus IS prototype with emissions testing equipment and manufacturer plates was spotted in the Colorado Rocky Mountains by The Fast Lane Car:

Lexus IS 200t Turbo Spotted

As suggested by TFLCar, a plausible possibility for this IS prototype is the testing of the 2.0L turbo engine first introduced with the NX 200t.

Lexus has already trademarked IS 200t in various markets around the world, and the 2.0L turbo the best candidate to replace the aging 2.5L V6 currently found in the IS 250.

If its just a powertrain testing, why is the whole car taped up? Also, this engine is already in use, why does it needs testing?

Exactly what I was thinking. Why use any camo and draw attention

The camouflage is quite ineffective due to the distinct shape of the spindle grille. LOL. Great job Lexus -- the spindle grille works really well.

Testing probably because it's tuned differently for the IS vs the NX and also to test NVH with a new engine.

New RX production seems awfully tight for a Pebble Beach reveal unless Lexus is planning a Detroit reveal.

A car with that weight and this engine will barely move, there's nothing sporty about it.

Great ! An all new RX (200t - 350 - 450) in 2015 ! Together with the GS F (probably), and we know the program for Detroit. What's next, a baby-NX (a guess, the CX ?)

I know why don't they just not put any camo on? People can't tell its a 200t but putting camo just shouts look at me, everyone knows its not a new car just a different engine.

Because it is a deliberate strategy to build excitement/publicity for the new engine. Lexus have extensive testing facilities in Japan that includes a no fly zone. We will never see a truly secret car. All new RX is due next year has been in development for 5 years yet no images/spy shots exist. They will be leaked or "caught" by the motoring press when it suits Lexus to do so. IS200t is just a new engine option not a new model. It has been taped up so we all feel excited that we are glimpsing a secret future model. All manufacturers do it.

Sorry to reply late, and I don't want to sound stupid saying this, but everything you just said just made me understand why Lexus prototypes are so hidden. Thank you.

I owned an IS 250 2008, manual transmission, I bought it brand new in Ottawa, currently it has 123,000. kms. Since 16,000.00 kms ago, started to burn out oil, not a leak. Lexus at Tony Graham on Hunt Club road said they have data of this model IS that has been giving this problem to few IS's owners. They will honour the warranty because the warranty for this goes up to 140,000.00 kms, for the last 8000 kms they were filling up the oil, once was 2 liters, then 1 liter and a half, then 2 and to complete the 8 k was something similar, meanwhile they were sending this data to Lexus and well they will change the parts inside of the engine, but not the block. Some people have told me that the best thing to do is change the whole block and of course the parts too, but the Lexus rep at Tony Graham Dealer told me that the block does not need to be replace because has nothing to do with the components they will replace this week (Jan 14, 2015). Also they told me that they extended the warranty for this matter; that they will guarantee this job for 40 k and well I am little bit afraid. Is a Lexus and should not happen, I think. Would like to know if other owners have experienced this too. I am still a Lexus believer and think that will get the new IS if they bring the 2.0 turbo. I do not regret about this car, I've seen some of my friends literally crying because of repairs on BMW and AUDI, the most expensive bill I have received from Lexus has been around 800 dls, when they replace lot of parts, fluids and things like that.
