Toyota recalls 11,000 Lexus SUVs for head restraint issue: See affected models

Toyota is recalling about 11,000 late model Lexus crossover SUVs for a head restraint issue.

In certain Lexus SUVs, the driver and front passenger seat head restraints may be removed without pressing the release button, Toyota said in a voluntary recall notice Wednesday. This defect – possibly resulting in the vehicle not meeting federal safety standards – may increase the risk of injury to an occupant in the event of a rear-end crash if a head restraint is removed and not replaced, the automaker said.

Customers will be notified about the issue by late August 2024 and Lexus dealers will replace the head restraints at no cost to customers, Toyota said.

Old school Toyota fans and observers will know that going way back to the 1990s and 2000s Toyota leadership became concerned about "big company disease" potentially infiltrating Toyota. Well this tip of the iceberg example I posted here shows that Toyota has deeply been affected by "big company disease" for years and years now.

Whatever Akio Toyoda did or tried to do while president of Toyota to improve the company, it wasn't anywhere near enough.

I think pointing to the LY650 or the rumours of a Lexus jet and offroad concepts would be a better way to make your point vs a guy angry that Toyota who has 350,000 employees a few of them directed budget and effort towards community events and inclusion.

It is a monumental task to coherently and deliberately steer a ship that large, especially when the parts are all wonky and disaggregated. The amount of corporate baggage in terms of people and politics and BS must be enormous, intertwined with a million existing agreements and projects that people have embedded into Toyota and themselves into.

I will have to say that all of this "woke" stuff is at the direction of Toyota North America especially in the past couple of years. Toyota HQ in Japan is vehemently conservative.

I think Toyoda-san did quite a lot, it'll take time to see the differences that he made, especially with regard to who is responsible in managerial positions in the future.

I dont know about any of that, all i know is qdr seems to be suffering real bad these days with new tgna products and launching many models isnt working out that great. Also the legendary qdr of toyota may have been greatly influenced by a couple things including, being able to keep model lines the same for long periods of time (Practice makes perfect).

All I can say is that is a rabbit hole you don't want to fall into; leave it as that

I don't understand this. Removable head restraints may be removed and not replaced whether they have a release button or not. Or is the fear that a head restraint without a release button may fall off (with no intention) and then just left off without being replaced?

Seeing that this is a recall in the United States (and also in Canada, I presume), this would affect Canadian-made (Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada) NX and RX models. I wonder if Japanese-made NX and RX models are affected also?
