Say Goodbye to the Cadillac ATS sedan.

The ATS sedan will be phased out of production at the end of 2018. Not surprising, IMO. It was simply too performance-oriented, too stark inside (lacking nice trim), and too stiff-riding for the average Cadillac customer. It's one thing to satisfy the press-fleet......quite another to satisfy Cadillac loyalists. It did, however, form an excellent chassis for the current-generation Camaro SS, which it shares its platform with.

Dead: Cadillac ATS Sedan

It is with some degree of sadness that I must announce to you that the Cadillac ATS sedan—scrappy would-be BMW 3 Series killer, occasional poster child for Cadillac’s troubles, handling delight and proof that rear-drive four-doors still matter—is no more. Production will cease at the end of the 2018 model year run.

This comes to us from a Cadillac official who confirmed the news to Autoblog. “Production of the ATS Sedan is ending due to extensive plant upgrades, expansion and re-tooling to prepare for the next generation of Cadillac sedans,” spokesman Donny Nordlicht said. The last we heard, the ATS and larger CTS would be replaced by just one mid-sized sedan called the CT5, and an even smaller Audi A3-sized competitor was also in the works, possibly called the CT3 or CT4.

The ATS coupe seems to be sticking around for now.

Cadillac Is Replacing The ATS And CTS With Just One Sedan Because You Jokers Didn't Buy Them
We at Jalopnik have screamed to anyone who will listen that the Cadillac ATS and CTS sedans are not …

The ATS has been around since the 2012 model year, so it was due for a modern replacement of some sort even if it wasn’t selling slowly—which it unfortunately was. Cadillac’s troubles are well-documented, leading the recent departure of its president, Johan de Nysschen. The people want their luxury crossovers and SUVs and Cadillac is scrambling to play catch-up with a lineup full of sedans that buyers weren’t especially keen on.

And the ATS had its troubles, for sure. Over the years, critics (including this website) dinged it for a small trunk, a small rear seat, a frustrating infotainment interface and interior bits that felt too close to the Chevrolet parts bin to make it a viable competitor to Audi or Mercedes.

But damn if the ATS wasn’t a fun car to drive. For whatever reason the ATS (and its very fast, very kickass V variant) was abundant in press fleets across the country, so over the years we did everything in it from road trips to actual camping. To me, the ATS felt like an old friend, something that I always understood and trusted even in spite of its flaws. It was a superb handler, better in many cases than BMW’s offerings. The car’s cornering and agility never failed to impress me, and served as consistent proof that General Motors’ best cars were its performance cars. The ATS wasn’t perfect, but it was a good car.

I’m a bit sad to see it go, but it had reached the end of its run anyway. With Cadillac’s newfound focus on SUVs, I hope whatever comes after it can please enthusiasts just as much. And has better-looking gauges.

That is what happens when companies listen to BMW fans' opinions. BMW fans do not like BMWs for what they are, they like the BMW badge, however crap the car is, they only like the BMW badge.

When you ask a BMW fan what they like about their BMW, they answer: "iDrive. The ultimate integrated infotainment system.".

Yeah, someone on Twitter caught this on GM's freshly released MY 2019 VIN decoder charts early today. I can't say I'm surprised.

Its sad that Cadillac made a car for enthusiasts who didn't respond. True it lacked a few things (which car is perfect) but overall Cadillac really made a bold move here and it flopped bad. A shame and it says a lot about people who claim they want sporty sedans but they can't get past a badge.

I think the ATS is one of the best looking sedans out, the ATS-V in particular is dope. That said I think MMarshall and Levi hit the nail on the head here. People do not want small Caddy's. :(

Don't want to get too far off-topic, but that may also be what we end up seeing with the Genesis G70....too many people saying: "That's a HYUNDAI"?

Well, the problem is not that it is a Hyundai. May current favorite supercar is a Honda. It is the final product that just hasn't got anything for it.

Of course not....that's exactly my point. Some of the same things that worked against the ATS (Cadillac sedan buyers not wanting sport sedans or a small size) might also work against the G70...but, of course, we'll have to wait and see.

I think Cadillac biggest problem is their terrible reliability. I like the look of the ATS, but never test drove it based on it being so unreliable. When I look for a car it has to have at least average reliability otherwise I don't bother considering it any longer, I am sure I am not the only one....

IDK if it is that unreliable (in the eyes of a Lexus owner, anything Euro/American is unreliable lol)...but it had a terrible backseat and CUE system, and the GM 'Gages'...the only folks missing the car really besides the V model is are the unicorn 6MT ones. I've read that the few that have sought out used manuals have gotten them for rock bottom prices.

The consumer reports 2018 edition predicted the ATS would have worse than average reliability. For 2017 they didn't have enough data, 2016 had much worse than average, 2015 had worse than average... not very good IMHO.

That's too bad, but I would surmise most of its buyers were only leasing them, just like they would a 3 or C Class. They aren't seen as desirable after lease to most consumers, except for those looking for a bargain unicorn 6 speed.

I agree most people are leasing them, but it is still a pain to go back to the dealer for repairs... it is a shame, Cadillac should do better and make better cars. I like the brand, but I am not going to touch them until they make better product. I am looking forward to the next IS, that is the car I am waiting for if it is good.
