In some sense, debuting a hybrid TTV8 with only about 650 hp would have been clowned if it were a Lexus. Instead, as an alternative, we got the concepts of a plan of an electric reincarnation of the LFA. At least the concept looks gorgeous in my eyes.

Nothing like trying to make the best of a tough and even tougher situation huh

I mean if you're gonna be down on power don't do it on your newly launched "not for losers" pure motorsport line and it's debut vehicle.

Rather than the LFA, the GR GT's debut reminds me the most of the Polestar 1 from half a decade ago. Which also launched a sub-brand into a full-fledged separate brand, and also had a hybrid powertrain making over 600 HP.

The difference was that thing had a 4-cylinder.

Speaking of 4-cylinders, Toyota has developed a 4-cylinder that's 400 horsepower. 641 horsepower for a TTV8 hybrid seems pretty weak.

We're told that building the new GT was an exercise that has its roots in the Japanese tradition of tearing down a temple to rebuild it called Shikinen Sengu. Like those temple builders teaching a new generation how to make something great, the new GR GT is an attempt to pass supercar-building knowledge down from the LFA generation to the next. [caranddriver]
"tearing down a temple" is one way to put it...

Unless in a twisted sense, Akio finds this to be enough and the best Toyota can put out? I know there's been some discourse about how we feel he's out of touch at times, but this has got to be egregious even for his standards??? This was spied with the AMG GT/ (which at least has 577 hp but way more in performance models)

That's a good point. It's also not a good look for GR as a brand when the existing GR Corolla has a 3-pot that makes 300 HP, while this 8-cylinder engine with an extra electric motor makes only twice that amount.

The Stellantis Hurricane and S58 I6's without any hybridization can already run near 600 HP.

I'm watching this live at 27 minutes in and the caption under the presentation mentions that these cars are still under development and are subject to changes "without notice".

I wouldn't be surprised if they boost the power on the GR GT more. Lexus is indefinitely cooked.

I just watched the live feed but I don't think they gave the specs on the engine yet can someone point me to where this was mentioned or is this just insider info? Like I said like a month ago it's a good looking Toyota. That LFA though?

Also just noticed that it apparently has carbon ceramic brakes as standard? Won't be cheap.

I love Gazoo Racing, but I don't think it was necessary to spin it off as its own brand. There should have been a Lexus and a Toyota variant. I'm not hating on the car itself, but it's so bizarre for Toyota to take this car away from Lexus.

I am personally ok with Toyota spinning off Gazoo Racing. I think the problem is that both Lexus F and GR can co-exist well together (again, look at VW group). I am ok with an EV LFA as long as its not replacing a combustion model. Ideally Lexus and Toyota would have both had V8H and GT3 models, and Lexus would be more involved in motorsport as a whole. GR seems to have eaten too much of the pie the way I see it.

Have to give them credit, it's a really nice interior. Wish the new ES was as good as this.

My dude it's a Lexus IS interior in a $250k car that only has 640hp.

There is no credit to be given here. This is literally the least they could do.

Some aspects are gorgeous, and some are just downright disappointing. The original LFA was a masterpiece inside and out. I'm okay with this car though, because form follows function and this car is a genuine racecar for the road with some luxuries equipped with it.

I have a lot of mixed feelings.

I will say this, if the actual power figures of the GR GT is 641 horsepower then they're in a lot of trouble. We were told it'd make really close to four figures, if not four figures. I hope those are the numbers for the GT3 car because no matter how cool it looks, that is not powerful enough if they want to command over a quarter of a million dollars for one.
The prototype specs of this car are absolutely trash. Their original goal was 900-950PS and 700PS+ from the ICE alone. Now the system power output i.e. with the hybrid system is only 650PS. The weight target is 1750kg despite using a lot of fancy materials. So this prototype GR GT actually has worse power-to-weight ratio than the LFA NE (371 PS/t vs. 413 PS/t) though it has almost twice the torque.

By comparison the BMW S63 makes 620-650PS at the wheels, and the LC-F prototype made about 660PS also from just the ICE. After 6 years of "meticulous engineering" GR managed to make the car less powerful. And let's not forget it's not even the most powerful Japanese sports car ever, because Nissan made a 720PS GTR special edition. I don't know why I expected this thing to challenge the AMG GT BS, becase with these numbers it'll be lucky to surpass the AMG GT R. Good job Akio Toyoda you just managed to humiliate yourself again.

This is a fair take. I share your sentiments.

GR has cemented itself as a legendary sub-brand, but to do it while killing off Lexus' core competencies and diverting resources away from Lexus is disappointing.
