If column shifters are so space-efficient, how come every suv doesnt have one...

Each car manufacturer has different philosophies. Each customer has different opinions, priorities and/or preferences.

As the saying goes. To each their own.

American cars have been known to do this and some Benzs. Whether it's for space or constraints.

I personally don't like it but I don't hate it.

Because they are exteremely ugly and remind of 1980's oldfartmobiles.

BMW introduced and electronic column mounted shifter in last gen 7 series, but quickly reverted back to center console shifter in the current gen.

I agreed it looks cheap especially for this vehicle of this price.

Probably because a number of SUV's, particularly the crossover car-based ones, share a lot of common parts with sedans and coupes, and very few if any regular passenger cars in the American market still have a traditional column-shifter, although some Mercedes and BMW models have a small column-stub.

I have to admit though, the Range Rover Sport is my favorite...I love that SUV.....
