The January figures for at least part of the luxury-class sales are out...I'll post them. Mercedes continues to do very well, as it has been doing recently.

Mercedes-Benz jumped out to an early lead in the race for U.S. luxury auto sales supremacy, posting a record January after winning the crown last year for the 1st time since 2013.

Mercedes sold 25,527 cars and light trucks in the U.S. last month, a 3.5 percent increase from a year earlier, according to a statement. Following a year in which premium car models lost market share to light trucks, the brand scored significant gains with sedans last month, as the C-class jumped 27 percent and E-class surged 49 percent.

“This is the strong start we look for following a record year,” said Dietmar Exler, CEO of the Atlanta-based U.S. unit. The German automaker also took the global sales title from BMW last year.

Mercedes-Benz's rivals weren’t as fortunate last month. BMW increased sales just 0.1 percent to 18,109, while Toyota Motor Corp.’s Lexus plunged 26 percent to 15,572. The results exclude BMW’s Mini cars and Daimler’s work trucks and Smart cars, because they aren’t luxury vehicles.

Volkswagen AG’s Audi continues to close the gap against the “big 3” atop the U.S. luxury market. The brand reported an 11 percent sales gain to 13,201 vehicles, powered by more than 30 percent increases for the A4 car models and Q5 and Q3 crossovers.

Mercedes and its independent retailers had constructive dialogue about how to build on last year’s results, Exler said Saturday at the National Automobile Dealers Association meeting in New Orleans.

“We challenge each other with the simple idea: How can we do better?” he said in an interview. “Nothing else really matters. That is working very, very well.”

I thought Toyota and Lexus assured us that low inventories were not going to be an issue going into 2017. So much for that.
Just did a check of a local dealer's inventory....hardly any GS's. Mostly GS350s, even less GS200ts, no GSFs.

To my understanding, who would want a GS200t if they can still get a 350? Give me the N/A V6 any day of the week.

Who would want a four cylinder over a V6? A luxury car buyer looking to lease the least expensive possible model to drive for 3-4 years.


OK.....maybe I'll give you that. But the majority of buyers in the premium/upmarket category want, and probably expect, at least a N/A V6.

Just yesterday, for instance, at the D.C. auto show, it was funny, listening to the Cadillac reps go on and on, with their spin about why their flagship CT6 makes do with a 2.0T four. Not only does its arch-rival Lincoln Continental come with a base N/A V6 (at a lower base price than the CT6, I might add), but even the new 2017 Buick LaCrosse also does....a sedan which is considered significantly downmarket to the CT6. With the CT6, you have to pay extra to get (roughly) the same engine that Buick gives you standard. When I conveniently pointed this out to them, all I got was one of two things...either a blank stare, or more spin LOL. :rolleyes:
