Doing active duty? Reserves? Been retired less than one year? Got other members of your family interested in a new Lexus? Well, Lexus has raised its military discount....with some restrictions, although it seems somewhat unclear (?) if this program is entirely from Lexus or tied in with CarsDirect.

When it comes to discounts, Lexus has a good range of offers that are rarely advertised. One of these is the automaker's Military Reward Program for active duty personnel. However, a recent change has made the deal a bit sweeter. So who's eligible? What are the requirements? And where are the deals? Here's what you need to know.

Deal info

Starting this month, Lexus has increased the value of its Military Reward Program from $750 to $1,000. The discount can be applied toward any new Lexus model.

Shoppers eligible to receive the discount include:

  • Current active duty members of the U.S. Military
  • U.S. Military inactive reserves
  • Military retirees within one year of retirement
  • Household members of eligible U.S. Military personnel
Like most offers of this type, shoppers must finance through Lexus Financial Services to take advantage of the offer. The program is set to expire January 3, 2017.

Where the deals are

When it comes to deals, most Lexus models tend to be great cars to lease. For example, the turbocharged 2016 IS 200t has an MSRP of nearly $39,000 but can be leased from just $349 for 36 months with $1,999 at signing (based on 10,000 miles/year).

If you opt for something larger, the 2015 GS 350 sedan is an outstanding value at $409 for 36 months with $2,999 at signing. That's impressive for a car with an MSRP of $50,295. To put that in perspective, the Lexus has an effective lease cost (factoring payment and amount due) equal to a whopping $192 per month less than a 2016 BMW 528 ($492 vs. $684).

Finance offers tend to see a fair amount of fluctuation, with offers ranging from 0.9% to 2.9% APR depending on the model. Current APR offers are in a bit of a lull after the holidays, with all models sitting at 2.9% for 60 months. Unfortunately, standard cash back is almost never offered.

Our take

The change brings the Military Reward to the same amount as the automaker's College Graduate Program. It's a respectable amount that can be used to sweeten some already outstanding deals, especially when it comes to leasing.
