Following the new LFAII, Toyota has launched the new Celica and the new MR2 sports models in quick succession! As if going against the trend, Toyota has also announced newly developed engines, including a 1.5LNA, turbo, and 2L turbo. Here we bring you the latest information on the mid-engine MR2.

■Newly developed 2L, inline 4-cylinder turbo with 400 horsepower + mid-ship 4WD!
We have received information that the new MR2 will be a limited edition car with a price tag of around 10 million yen (the CG illustration was created by Best Car).
On May 28, 2024, Toyota, Mazda, and Subaru held a joint press conference in Tokyo. At the conference, it was revealed that Toyota is developing three types of engines: a 1.5L NA, a 1.5L turbo, and a 2L turbo.
Both engines are about 10% smaller in volume and height than conventional engines of the same class, while achieving high output and high fuel efficiency. They are at a level that will clear the planned exhaust gas regulations (Euro 7, etc.) in Europe and North America, and Toyota has achieved the Euro 7 standard with an internal combustion engine, which other manufacturers have given up on. The new engine is said to be compatible with a variety of fuels, including e-fuel (synthetic fuel), biofuel, and liquid hydrogen.
Toyota's next-generation engine was unveiled in May 2024. The 2L turbo engine, which features the red head cover shown in the photo, is also compatible with CN fuel.
Surprisingly, the latest information has revealed that one of these vehicles is currently being developed as a mid-engine 4WD equipped with a newly developed 2.0L turbo, known as the new MR2.
Our magazine Best Car first released information about the new MR2 in a scoop in October 2023. At the time, it was said that the car would be equipped with a 1.6L turbo inline-3 engine from the GR Yaris and GR Corolla, but the latest information reveals that the powertrain has been changed to the newly announced next-generation 2L turbo.
■Price will be in the 10 million yen range and will be released in 2026!
Just hearing that it's a non-electrified mid-engine 4WD makes me eager to get behind the wheel (the CG illustration was created by Best Car)
Even if the engines of the GR Yaris and GR Corolla are no longer used, their 4WD system, the GR-FOUR, can still be adopted, and there are a few mid-engine 4WD systems that use pure engines (neither the front nor rear wheels are driven by motors), such as the Audi R8 and Lamborghini Diablo.
The next-generation 2L turbo engine is being developed with a target output of 400ps/550Nm (approximately 56.1kgm), and the new MR2 should have similar specs. There are also other engines being developed with a 300ps/400Nm (40.8kgm) class and a 600ps class race-only engine, but we'll discuss those another time.
The GR Yaris is equipped with an 8DAT. In manual mode, unlike regular Toyota vehicles, you pull the car towards you to raise it up and push it forward to lower it down.
The new MR2 will be available with a 6-speed MT and an 8-speed DAT, and will be produced in small quantities as GRMN. According to one theory, the price will be in the 10 million yen range and it will be sold exclusively in Japan. The next-generation engine will be made to be compatible with carbon neutral (CN) fuel, so it will be able to run even in the future when gasoline engines are banned.
The new MR2, a non-hybrid, pure gasoline engine midship sports 4WD, is likely to debut in 2026. We look forward to seeing it in action.
