Lexus should also bring in a 2 row GX as well which would be at a lower price point and have more cargo room than the 3 row GX. Bring in a diesel variant and a GX 570 as well. This would also increase sales as well. F Sport the GX as well...and bring in Android Auto and more USB's...

The story of Genesis is just sad. Their engineering and design team know how to make good luxury cars. But their sales and marketing department are the most incompetent in the industry. And leaving the brand without crossovers for so many years is a huge irreversible mistake.

Genesis is making a good product, but their US dealership situation is unresolved, to put it mildly. And their product mix is exactly wrong for what's currently selling.

Genesis got a new US head, and its the former Toyota exec that left Audi last year. Mark Del Rosso. I'm curious how many ex-Toyota/Lexus personnel are working at Hyundai now.

The highest-profile Toyota / Lexus to Hyundai defection is Brian Smith. He spent over 8 years at the Toyota brand and 9 years at Lexus, rising to the U.S. Vice President of Marketing position at the latter. Both Krew and I met him personally. In his new capacity as Hyundai America's Chief Operating Officer, I caught up with him again and came thisclose to interviewing him during the recent Hyundai Palisade press preview, but my unexpectedly late arrival from the test drive precluded me from doing so.

It is great that you provide these sales tallies, but I highly recommend not categorizing them by generation. There is immense overlap in changeover during calendar years. Especially for competitors that I am see many inaccuracies.

In the case of the M-Class/GLE and GL/GLS, plus others, many of those are listed for the wrong generation.

Roughly Half of 2019 sales were for the delayed released new W167 2020 MY GLE (supposed to be a 2019MY), with plenty from the outgoing W166 holdover. GLS sales in 2019 were mostly X166. X167 2020 GLS was a fall arrival, yet isn't listed.

The 2006 W164 M-Class was launched in April 2005 and nearly all of 2005 sales accounted for new unibody W164, as opposed to the original BOF W163 M-Class.

This is why I am particularly about identifying and differentiating what is MY or calendar year.

The GX is strictly by calendar year it seems and since we've been in generation 2 of GX since January 2010, it all neatly fits. For LX, it has always been Q1, same model year launches by generation in January 1996, March 1998, and January 2008 respectively.

However for many others you are grouping sales based on MY and also to one single generation, when that isn't the case. I just wouldn't group it by generation, as that can be misleading.

For RX, some 1998 sales data is available, but depends on the source. By generation, the "2RX" was launched spring 2003, so most of 2003 sales were "2RX". 2009 sales were 90% 3RX, which launched February 2009 for 2010.

4RX was the rare example, in being released late in 2015, its sales were so negligible for overall RX sales numbers in the year 2015.

Audi is worse, because they release new generations so early in the year, a 2021 model would dominate 2020 sales.

Well Mercedes and bmw have to pump our models for scale. They don’t have a Toyota backing like Lexus does. So they are trying to pump out more and more vehicles and they share tons of parts.

I don't remember if this has been posted before, besides China, Lexus sales in Europe grew by 14%! (6th consecutive year of growth) Lets see if I will help for 2020/2021.

Source: https://newsroom.lexus.eu/lexus-posts-record-sales-and-sixth-consecutive-year-of-growth-in-europe/

96% are Hybrids in Western Europe!

They also write:
"This year, Lexus will launch its first battery electric vehicle (BEV), the UX 300e. The range of Lexus electrified models will be expanded in the coming years, with plug-in hybrid technology and a new, dedicated BEV model platform. This is in line with the “Lexus Electrified” vision for leveraging the potential of electrified powertrains to reinvent the joys of driving."

Since the dedicated BEV platform should come by MY2022 to deliver by 2023 (according to a shared picture around here from Lexus China), really looking forward to check UX300e pricing/what will come in PHEV version...

I started to look for a car last year, and since I'm engaged from January 1st, I guess I will marry before getting a new car (as I want at least PHEV)... Honestly, I wasn't expecting to wait this long :p

I agree, however this is big picture and maybe in the future I can categorize them by model year as oppose to using calendar year/in which sales are tracked. You're not the first to point this out.

In the case of the M-Class/GLE and GL/GLS, plus others, many of those are listed for the wrong generation.

The M Class is the predecessor of the GLE or the GLE is the successor of the M Class. The M Class arrive in the U.S. on September 1998 and Mercedes changed the name to GLE in 2015 so I do understand but hard to indicate in the sales tally.

This is why I am particularly about identifying and differentiating what is MY or calendar year.

Again, sales are on a calendar year and model years can come out either the end of Q1, Q2 and most times Q3 of a particular year. Since this a sales thread I'm looking at sales for particular models. In the future I will try to incorporate the break down of each generation within the calendar years (a little bit of work but can be done).

The GX is strictly by calendar year it seems and since we've been in generation 2 of GX since January 2010, it all neatly fits. For LX, it has always been Q1, same model year launches by generation in January 1996, March 1998, and January 2008 respectively.

Agreed about Audi.

Thank you @Trexus for consistently compiling this and the other model breakdowns for us. Highly highly appreciated. It would be cool to see a new segment for the website including various types of sales figures like this, if possible @krew

These figures show that Lexus doesn't need to match BMW crossovers segment for segment in order to achieve strong SUV sales. RX sold more than x1 through x4, and just as much with x6 included. What an amazing success.

Agreed about Audi.

I wasn't saying categorize them (it's a headache), but the opposite. Looks can be soooo deceiving brand-to-brand. It's not clear cut to separate them by generation, because of so much overlap in between unfortunately.

I gave up myself, because it's so hard for me to follow across brands. It is better in my opinion to group them by calendar year or month, because generation to generation is very hard to break down and is rarely done any justice by automakers' press departments, for sometimes self-serving reasons. (new model is a flop, behind, etc)

RX sales for 1998 were 42,191 from March 20, 1998 date of launch to December 31, 1998.

1999 sales were actually 73,498 units (1/1/1999 to 12/31/1999) which included 1999 and also 2000 model year RX 300s from October 1999 to December 31st.

The M-Class (W163) sold from September 18, 1997 to December 31, 1997 the tally of 14,568 ML 320 units.

Sold 43,134 from January 1 to December 31, 1998, which included 1999 ML320 and ML430 (V8) from September.

45,206 in CY1999, including 2000MY ML 55 AMG, '00 ML 430, & '00 ML 320 in late 1999 months.

52,764 in CY2000, including '01 MY units from Autumn 2000 to December 2000.

The easiest months are when there is no model changeover. The first few months of a model changeover are a big deal not to overlook, as was the case with LS 430 alongside LS 460 in October-December 2006. Sales cratered from January to September 2006 since January 8, 2006 reveal of 460.

The 4-Series did go on sale in September 2013 and was included in 3-Series sales. In 2014 it began reporting separately.

Audi 1A5 and 2A5 comprised both 2017 sales tally since 2018 A5 didn't rollout until March and was slow into May.

The story of Genesis is just sad. Their engineering and design team know how to make good luxury cars. But their sales and marketing department are the most incompetent in the industry. And leaving the brand without crossovers for so many years is a huge irreversible mistake.

But there are two of them coming, the GV80 and GV70, and they are both RWD based. The GV80 will also get a new I6 Diesel engine, something that Toyota should have made for the Prado and Hilux/Fortuner, but did not.
