We aren't going to be seeing the next-generation Chevrolet Camarountil next month. But even though we know when we're going to see the new muscle car, it's totally unclear whether Chevy will dole out technical details. That means we can't answer the latest version of the age-old question: Camaro or Ford Mustang?

Not surprisingly, General Motors North America President Mark Reuss has already stated his position, saying he was "very confident" that the sixth-generation Camaro will be faster, more agile and more efficient than the Ford. Reuss made his comments after saying he drove the new Camaro back-to-back with the Mustangthe week prior.

Reuss' statement came in a conversation with Fox News about the 2016 Camaro where he elaborated on the car's weight shedding and how it fit into GM's strategy on other new models. "There are some really cool things in the Camaro, that are quite different than the Malibu, [and] CT6," Reuss told Fox.

As we reported previously, the Camaro will shed some 200 pounds by switching to aluminum and other lightweight composites for some of its components. With May 16 just over a month away, here's hoping Reuss decides to loose some other details on the next Camaro ahead of its debut.

Seems like Mr. Reuss has made the issue mostly Camaro vs. Mustang. I wonder if he has forgotten that somebody else is also part of the picture.................;)

That's a VERY bold claim IMO. Is he making a general comparison between the two models, or is he comparing specific model variants versus each other?

I think the Camaro 1LT already trounced the Mustang GT, so if they can improve upon the existing formula at all, they should be set to make good on the claim!

Challenger, outside of Hellcat guise, is not a particularly impressive vehicle, IMO.

Well there are so many variants to talk about here, that his claim is just so hollow and superfluous. Again, was he comparing Camaro vs Mustang overall? If so that wouldn't make much sense, due to the numerous aforementioned variants for both models. Was he simply comparing specific trim variants of each model? If so, then which ones? The 1LT vs the GT, or other variants? For example, the new generation Mustang has the 350R variant, which is a very fast, and very strong-handling Mustang variant.

With Chevrolet's significant MSRP increases, the Camaro will not beat the Mustang on price. And that alone will steer budget conscious buyers towards the blue oval.
Arrogance always comes at a price...

Here's an interesting article on the subject, which seems to separate fact from fiction:

(It's true that this article compares a 2016 Camaro with a 2015 Mustang, but, since the Mustang was all-new this year, few changers are expected for 2016).

http://www.autonews.com/article/20150516/OEM04/150519902/camaro-vs.-mustang:-who-has-the-edge?

The Chevrolet Camaro-Ford Mustang rivalry and sales race is about to heat up again.

Chevrolet has pulled the covers off the redesigned 2016 Camaro scheduled to arrive this fall. The new Camaro, rebuilt from the wheels up and now riding on the same underpinnings as the Cadillac ATS sport sedan, will face the red-hot Mustang, which was redesigned last year and is getting more enhancements for 2016.

The 2016 Camaro is the first since the mid-1980s to offer a four-cylinder engine.

Here’s how the two pony cars -- the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro and 2015 Ford Mustang -- compare on paper:

Engines

2016 Camaro
Four-cylinder: DOHC 16-valve 2.0-liter turbo, 275 hp, 295 pounds-feet of torque
V-6: DOHC 24-valve 3.6-liter, 335 hp, 284 pounds-feet of torque
V-8: OHV (pushrod) 6.2-liter, 455 hp, 455 pounds-feet of torque

2015 Mustang
Four-cylinder: DOHC 16-valve 2.3-liter turbo, 310 hp (premium fuel; 290 hp estimated on regular), 320 pounds-feet of torque (premium fuel)
V-6: DOHC 24-valve 3.7-liter, 300 hp, 280 pounds-feet of torque
V-8: DOHC 32-valve 5.0-liter, 435 hp (premium fuel), 400 pounds-feet of torque (premium fuel)

Advantage: Camaro. Two of the Camaro’s three engines outmuscle the Mustang, and the output of the Camaro’s third engine, the 2.0-liter, is closer than the numbers imply. The Mustang’s 2.3-liter engine only delivers the full 310 hp when fed premium fuel -- which most drivers do not buy. Ford will not say how much power the 2.3-liter EcoBoost loses running on regular, but some estimates say as much as 15 percent. Mustang’s 2.3-liter engine is capable of 32 mpg highway, but that engine is a $1,500 option. The 2.0-liter in the Camaro, Chevy says, will deliver “more than 30 mpg highway” and is the standard engine. Chevy also will offer its cylinder cutoff system, active fuel management, on V-6 and V-8 engines.

Transmissions

2016 Camaro
Manual: Six-speed
Automatic: Eight-speed

2015 Mustang
Manual: Six-speed
Automatic: Six-speed

Advantage: Camaro -- by two gears. Camaro and Mustang likely will get 10-speed automatics in a couple of years when the jointly developed Ford-GM 10-speed rear-wheel-drive automatic is in full production. For now, Camaro’s eight-speed automatic bests the Mustang’s six cogs. And that should pay fuel economy and performance dividends.

Suspension/brakes

2016 Camaro
Front, MacPherson struts with dual lower ball joints, twin-tube struts and direct-acting stabilizer bar; rear, independent five-link with twin-tube shocks and direct-acting stabilizer bar. Brakes: Four-wheel disc, all models.

2015 Mustang
Front, double-ball-joint independent MacPherson struts with lateral links and stabilizer bar; rear, integral link independent with coil springs and stabilizer bar. Brakes: Four-wheel disc, all models.

The drag coefficient on the redesigned 2015 Mustang has improved about 3 percent over the 2005-14 model.

Advantage: Mustang -- for now. We won’t know how well Chevy engineers tuned the Camaro’s suspension until the car gets closer to launch. We do know that the new Mustang’s independent suspension has been cited for providing the best handling performance in the car’s 50-year history.

Curb weight
2016 Camaro
3,519 (est.) pounds, four-cylinder automatic coupe

2015 Mustang
3,524 pounds, four-cylinder automatic fastback

Advantage: Camaro. Six years ago, the Mustang had a sizable curb weight advantage over the Camaro. But now these rivals are going in opposite directions. Chevy shaved at least 200 pounds from the 2016 Camaro. Most 2015 Mustang models added bulk over the 2014 version, thanks to the independent rear suspension and new features.

The 2015 Mustang GT

Body style
Camaro: Coupe, convertible

Mustang: Fastback, convertible

Advantage: Mustang. Since the Camaro returned in 2009, the coupe has been criticized for the massive blind spots caused by the thick rear roof pillars. That basic shape remains for the 2016 Camaro. The Mustang’s large sloping rear window helps improve visibility. Neither car offers great visibility with the convertible top up.

I'll call your stats and raise you one price comparison.
Same point: General Motors significantly raised the MSRP on all models of Camaro, vs. that of the Mustang. I'm no Mustang fan, because I own a Corvette powered special edition Trans Am Firehawk, but the numbers are out there....

2016 Camaro Priced Much Higher than Mustang, 2015 Camaro

General Motors has announced the pricing for the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro and not surprisingly, the 6th gen Chevy muscle car costs more than the new Ford Mustang while in V8 form, the new Camaro SS costs a couple grand more than the outgoing models.

...getting into the least expensive 2016 Camaro will end up running you $1,995 more than it would have in 2015 simply because the bare bones LS package is gone.

The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro 1SS starts at $37,295 while the Camaro 1SS for 2015 started at $34,500. .....some prospective buyers are still likely to sneer at the 2016 price increase of $2,795.

Camaro VS Mustang
The 2016 Ford Mustang V6 fastback (base model) has a starting price of $24,700, so the 2016 Camaro in its most basic form starts around $2,000 more than the Mustang. Even if you step up to the EcoBoost Mustang with 310hp and 320lb-ft of torque, the Ford only costs $26,200 while the base Camaro starts at $26,695 – so the Mustang has a major advantage in performance and price when it comes to the less expensive, more efficient models.

When you step up to the 2016 Ford Mustang GT fastback, the price sits at $33,200, making it $4,095 less expensive than the 2016 Camaro SS. The Camaro does have an advantage in power, but it will have to be proven that the Camaro SS is $4,000 better than the Mustang GT. Even if you get the loaded up Mustang GT Premium at $37,200, it is still slightly less expensive than the $37,295 Camaro SS.

I'm not a fanboy for either one....and as I posted some time ago, I think both sides seem to have forgotten about the Challenger. You may have a point about the price, though......since the 2016 Camaro design is brand-new, only time will tell if GM can actually sell them at that price. In general, though, both Camaro and Mustang fans seem to be fiercely loyal.......you can compare their traditional rivalry to the never-ending battle between F-150 and Silverado fans.

The Mustang is really incredible, an absolute bargain. It really is a world class product. Looks fantastic too. The Camaro will have to be really really good to beat it.
