The funny thing about those videos is the guy Mike Levine from PickupTruck.com became the Ford trucks marketing manager like a decade ago? Maybe not that long but he is 100% Ford now.

So go carless, but still offer affordable, small vehicles that happen to be trucks. Interesting.

That's the current state of the market. Light trucks or car-based crossover utility vehicles (which this FWD Ford Focus car-based Maverick is) have been growing in popularity for about 15 years now. The popularity of cars (sedans) has been declining, especially since the drop in oil prices in 2014/2015.

Buyers still prefer cars, not as sedans, but rather as higher-riding hatchbacks and pseudo-wagons (light trucks).

Ford made a small truck simultaneously cute and tough appearing, practical, interesting and affordable. Ford is on a roll for what North America wants....

Different markets. In Europe the panel vans are always more car like, like in US pickups are more car like. The VW Transporter is many peoples daily driver, same with for the Ford Transit Custom or even Mercedes V Class. These panel vans are way more practical in any possible way than CUVs/SUVs, have sliding rear doors, huge volume, high riding position, fairly good road handling, always more safety features (anyway, it is dumb and irresponsible to drive recklessly with other passengers in the car). They only look less cool to some. But there is a growing panel van market with the socially increasing desire of tasting van life. These vans are also more discrete, versatile and cheaper than full blown comping cars.

Again different markets. In European tight cities, CUVs/SUVs are successful because of the interior space advantage without inreasing vehicle length (vertical vs 'horizontal' sitting position).

If Toyota makes one 'Maverik', it will most likley be focused on NA market. The FT-4X could be a good candidate for both a 'SUV' and 'UTE'.
