@Falcon thank you for sharing - I moved this into a new thread since the other Land Cruiser thread has gotten confusing with so many models!

How is Toyota using the 2TR-FE in anything in 2026?

I guess this one is bound for second and third world countries?
They're using the same engine in the J250 in Japan. Could it be that engine is for the Japanese market and other markets will receive different powertrain options? I guess for the size of the thing the 2TR wouldn't feel bad on it.

The 2TR-FE is still a very strong engine in third world countries. These markets still have 5L-E diesel Prados with 100hp. But the turbodiesels will be the real deal.

I know the chances are slim, but I'd love for this to come to the North American market.

If they want to bring this to developed nations it would have to be a unibody transverse platform soft-roader like the Bronco Sport. IMV is just too weak to pass crash tests and IIHS will give it P rating on almost everything and buyers will have to pay expensive insurance premium for it.

Safety regulations in US need to chill. They have now become counter-productive since reduced car crash deaths could not match with increased pedestrian/cyclist deaths caused by increasingly big and heavy vehicles.

I drive the 4-series and now every SUV and pick-up truck on the road blinds my eyes at night with their "low beam" (which are higher and brighter than most high beams 20 years ago) and I'm always in their blind spot due to the height difference. You are now punished for driving low-riding cars like sedans and coupes.

My family has owned large suvs my whole life. Learned to drive in a first gen Sequoia and LX470. Only time I've ever driven a traditional sedan was when I was completing driving school. First car was a 4th gen 4runner. My wife and I decided to downsize our fleet to just one and keep our Subaru Forester. I've really enjoyed owning a smaller SUV, but I miss the truck feel. Would love for a car maker to come out with a smaller body on frame that didn't have a removal top, but it seems unlikely given safety regs in the US.

I very much agree with your last point. I try my best to not drive at night because it's so blinding and now every company has these massive light bars on the rear that blind you when you're just sitting a light. And it seems almost weekly now that I'm being run off the road by a full size truck/SUV. People rely too heavily on blind spot monitoring. More than likely our next car will be body on frame since it feels we're almost safer being more visible on the road and easier to see around the massive trucks that dominate the roads.

That and you can't see oncoming traffic when you're sitting in a right turn lane and there's an SUV or CUV immediately to your left.

I've been thinking about getting a late model year trail teams edition FJ or one with manual as a new project truck. But I'm also considering the GX460 since it was the most capable J150 platform truck overall. Anyone owned both and thoughts? P

GX460s are pretty nice, although I have mixed feelings about the styling. I'd probably prefer a 4Runner over a GX, mainly because I think the 4Runner looks better, and the 4.0 V6 doesn't have the cam tower or valley plate leaks that the 4.6 V8 does. If I did buy a GX460, I'd look for one without the air suspension.
