Next-Gen Lexus IS Hybrid?

Japanese magazine Best Car is reporting the next-generation Lexus IS will be coming this September, and will be available as a V6 hybrid capable of 58 MPG (4l/100kms) — here’s their photochop attempt at the third generation IS (click for a larger version):

Considering the huge marketing push for the 2011 IS update, I have my doubts we’ll see the next-gen IS this year, especially with the new GS on its way. Add the fact that a V6 IS delivering 58 MPG would beat the four-cylinder CT 200h on gas mileage, and I’m pretty much skeptical on all points here.

(As for the photochop — I fully expect the next-gen IS to be an evolution of current IS design, but I still think there will be more to it than a revised front-end and some rear wheel bulges.)

Is it me, or does the photoshop looks like a shrunken LS? And I do agree that the next gen IS might not be here this fall. Didn't the IS get a facelift recently? I'm thinking that the next gen IS and GS will make its debut when Toyota launches the all new, from the ground up, Toyota Crown. Seems to make sense, since the Crown is in its 2nd evo­lu­tion of the current chassis. If Toyota follows that same path for the last 2 or so decades, then Toyota is probably working on the new chassis for the Crown/Mark X/GS/IS for the 2012 models.

Krew, go with your instincts! you are right on all counts. No WAY the new IS is coming BEFORE the new GS, and I HOPE it has more changes than just whats in that picture. LEXUS already announced their plans for the next year and a half, and it didn't mention a new IS yet. (They DID leave the possibility for a smaller SUV than the RX, like a X-3 or Infinity EX.) The ES350 will change before the IS as well.

I agree with Krew. The IS was just updated for 2011. I'm not a fan of this photochop either. :(

Several Lexus reps were in the dealership last week and said that the only product launch for 2011 is the CT200h. We have taken delivery of our first CT200h today. He told us that 80% of the vehicles will have NuLux interior as opposed to leather and 95% will be built without navigation. Also, only a small percentage will be manufactured with LED headlamps. He also told us that the new GS will begin production in December of 2011 and the first deliveries should occur at the very beginning of 2012. He also mentioned that the ES replacement should arrive in dealerships by the summer of 2012. He made no mention of a replacement for the IS line.

NG IS sedan Q3 2013, NG IS wagon Q1 2014, both only as hybrid. NG GS Q2 2012.

Front end: Good Bulges in the rear? Not so much Lexus seems to be botching the releases of their sedans The way things are going, all 4 sedans will come out next year! They didn't plan this out very well, surprisingly BD
