Lexus GS F to Arrive Next Year with 500 Horsepower?

Lexus GS F news stories are picking up steam — last week, Motor Trend confirmed the production model, and now Autocar has some details on the upcoming super sedan:

Power will be close to 500bhp with torque rated at just under 400lb ft. Expect a 0-60mph time in the mid-4sec region with a top speed of more than 170mph.

Styling wise, expect the GS F to look as dramatic as it is sporting, its main design feature being an even more dramatic grille than that of the RC F.

Expect the base price to be close to £80,000, with a very high level of standard equipment to help justify the premium. Don’t expect any kind of hybrid propulsion beneath the bonnet, though: the GS F’s V8 will be a big, slightly old fashioned thumper – with neither a turbo nor an electric motor in sight.

It’s stands to reason that the GS F will benefit from most (if not all) of the performance upgrades introduced with the RC F coupe.

Autocar suggests that the GS F will get a “mildly uprated version” of the RC F’s 5.0L V8, which doesn’t make a whole lot of sense — considering the GS is only 50 lbs. heavier than the RC (GS 350 vs. RC 350), it stands to reason that both vehicles should benefit from a horsepower bump if it’s available.

As for timing, Autocar expects the GS F to be available in the fourth quarter of 2015 — just in time for the GS mid-cycle refresh, I suppose.

500-hp ? Honestly that is weak in term of horsepower when compete with German rivals though , hope Lexus have something special to offer , more comfort ride , or better handling , or both .

Sounds like it couldn't compete with the Germans. Lexus, please take a look at the E63 AMG S 4Matic.

    By the time this comes out in 2015. The all new 2016 G30 platform will usurp even AMG's best. We're talking about TwinPower 600bhp w drastic weight reduction using CFRP & a new xDrive option for ///M5. They should look at ///M Div not AMG.

    Crux. Yes there will be new kings on the block by the time of the GS-F release but Lexus is not into it be #1 with speed. Have you seen anything in the history of Lexus that shows that? The new RC-F is an example of this; it is heavier and slower than its German counterparts but do you really think Lexus missed the mark? "It's by design!" Lexus has and always will be about reliability which the Germans will never have. This is the dawn of Lexus into the performance world and while I agree they could come out of the blocks with a 'Godzilla killer' that just isn't who they are. The Germans build crap and IMHO the Lexus interiors are way better in both luxury and technology so it really boils down to do you want a POS German cars that can beat the plucky underdog in a race .001 percent of the time or do you want a solid car that you can beat the crap out of and it will never fail you and still thrill you. I go with the latter...

" With this sentiment, then they should leave the F brand alone & stop degrading it. You can design the prettiest car but if it's all-show-no-go, why bother? The asking price falls inline with the German counterparts. By this logic alone. Pricing. You cannot justify putting a slower, heavier product. Just advertise it as F-Sport, then there will be no bitching around here.

According to the source the GS F will be less powerful and more expensive than the Germans. If Lexus isn't ready to play with the guys they should rather wait for a proper twin-turbo V8. Such a half-hearted effort will only dilute the F brand.

I love it! 500 hp in a GS is going to be one hell of a performer but with reliability, comfort and a superior dealer experience compared to the Germans and the CTS V.

    Agreed, I want more power then my '13 GS. 500 is a good start. I don't need it to be faster. I'm not racing the kids down at the local hangout on Friday nights. I just want something with a little pickup. I will never buy an M5 or the like due to reliability.

Sadly misguided if this is the trajectory they are heading with the GS F. You can pack it with all the luxury & tech amenities. It will not justify a 80k plus asking price. Not w/o a 550+ motor under the bonnet. There is no arguing here, that is where it needs to be.

I would bet against Autocar that the GSF will have MORE than 500hp, I know Lexus is not all about having the mos HP but the other upgrades and fine tunings of the car make it more track worthy than a 100meter dash that other manufacturers are trying to achieve.

If the GS F gets more power, that is good news for the RC F, I too think it should get more power in order to improve straight line performance. But a GS F with a NA V8 would not be a direct rival to the M5/RS5/E AMG/XF-R/CTS-V, but more just a sporty GS with V8, note that there is no more GS 460, and it would be much cheaper than the rivals, more a sort of S6 rival.

    I agree that there is space in the market for something along the lines of an S6. However, Lexus should not brand such a car as an F. Otherwise they might lose what little brand equity the F brand has accumulated in its short lifespan.

Why everyone think HP matters time and time again proof that HP doesn't always matter right now the RC F has the most powerful engine in its class yet the M4 cost more for years I said Lexus vehicles are worth so much more than any German yet they always try to under price them... MB right now is the most over price Vehicle Manufacturer in this category the CLA can cost up to USD $60K. The new C-Class 200 starts at 40K. Audi the world number one luxury automaker doesn't even sell their cars at the price of BMW and Mercedes Benz (MB) Even some Infiniti are price higher than the Lexus competeting model . Every Lexus from the CT ES IS GS and LS are all underprice their CUV/SUV Line up the RX underprice the GX LX are good price but the GL Class comes no where near the quality and ability of the LX HP are just bragging numbers that's it Lexus knows what they are doing proof look at all the current and pass F models.

    I don't think price is the issue buddy, I'm pretty sure the GS is cheaper than the E class and 5 series and a wayyy better car, yet they have more sales. They should research why people like those cars, put the GS F on a diet in comparison to its rivals and have more amenities standard I guess.

    Dont worry I think these rumors are an under estimate from the initial speculations from a year ago. I believe it will be lighter and have at least 550 hp if not more. Hell if the LS TT can get 650 hp the GS should be right behind.

I wonder how the 2016 GS mid cycle refresh will have an "even more dramatic grille than that of the RC F?" How much more obtuse can the spindle get? I was wanting to get a 2016 GS. I have no interest in taking it to the track or comparing HP numbers with the neighbor, but anyone heard any more about refresh styling?

    I hope you are right. The entire car needs a more engaging style; except the front of the car (the spindle in particular) which needs to be refined. The hour glass look could be made quite compelling without being wildly obtuse! Yeah, the spindle is the new brand mark, I get it. But, it can be tweaked to look both aggressive AND refined. The front fascia of the CTS has achieved this . . . why can't Lexus? They can! . . . LF-LC and LF-CC are proof. Candidly, I am just hoping for a spindle on the 2016 GS that's not too far off the rails. But, wonders never cease.

if this turns out to be real lexus is making the same mistake on and on, less than 400 torques??? really?? the RC-F which is lighter has 391 torques and its not enough to get it off the line....LEXUS please don't make the same mistake again, look at the GS350 F-SPORT it was perfect because it was lighter than the germans, i dont care about horsepower because your not going to do 170 mph anyway, you need torque and lightness, especially lightness.....

Lexus should make GS-460, a regular V-8 that is currently used in the LS line. This car will be in the $60K range and will beat BMW 550i and Mercedes E550. This is a perfect luxury V-8 sporty car that fits everyday driving and has enough power for canyon road on the weekend. The GS-F should be 550HP, targeting track driving enthusiasts to competes with BMW M5, and Mercedes E63 AMG. There's a big gap between GS-350 at $47K to GS-F at $80K. Give buyers option to purchase.
