The Autoweb is all abuzz with news that Toyota has sued a Detroit-based pornography site for using Lexus in their site name, Lexus Cash.
The Japanese-based automaker filed a federal suit Thursday in Detroit, alleging Mario Mendoza, 26, and Katie Lynn Krzywdzinski, 24, both of Dearborn, broke trademark laws by using “Lexus” as the name of a pornographic Web site and of a site star.
The suit alleges the site “uses the mark ‘Lexus’ in an unwholesome and unsavory context” and “is likely to tarnish and blur the distinctive qualities” of the car model.
Very titillating, to be sure, and is bound to create the exact situation that Toyota was trying to avoid. The only way Lexus Cash could “tarnish and blur” the Lexus brand is by bringing attention to her site — and what else is this lawsuit going to do?
(Toyota should have just offered them a car for the domain and been done with it.)
