Video: Lexus LM Minivan at the Shanghai Auto Show

The upcoming LM luxury minivan is a switch-up play from Lexus — with vehicles like the LX SUV and ES sedan expanding to markets outside of the US, the LM will be built specifically for the Chinese market.

Let’s revisit the minivan with this video from Carwow:

(With news that China has drawn even with the USA in monthly vehicle sales, is there even a question why the LM exists?)

Our market is different. People that buy vans here drive them, they don't have a driver. As much as I think its kind of cool, I just don't see many buyers for it here in the states. It would be some used unicorn when the prices come down and probably discontinued.
Yes. Most of the cost of owning this vehicle in the U.S. will be hiring the chauffeur...although I don't really know whether rich executives drive themselves or let others do the driving.

For the US, Company pays for those expenses for big time executives and celebrities and what not. These expenses can usually be written off.
What a shame it’s the garbage cruise control stick. The wheel is such a disappointment.

Did they announce any figures for the engines in terms of power output?

Also, when will we find out the other Asian markets?

I’m praying there will be a RHD market on there.
The 7-seat layout according to Top Gear Philippines.

Image credit was Lexus, not sure if one of the press releases shows it or they’ve just put up an Alphard interior
What a great luxury van, in function and looks. It makes all the luxury sedans (Maybach, Bentley Rolls Royce) look uncomfortable.

People base their opinions way too much on fictions in cinema.
I wouldn't be surprised if Lexus viewed this as a good case study for designing this type of automotive environment, given the recent updates on their self driving efforts (they're serious about this stuff). Electric platforms have a lot of potential for miniaturization of hardware, increasing interior space. It's obviously way too early for this to be anything but highly speculative, but imagine a future long wheelbase LS on an electrified platform, with an interior of this type. Or an electrified Toyota Century.

@ the 1:55 mark.
The unveil video has got quite attention. Last time I checked 820k views, more than any Lexus model.

@ the 1:55 mark.

Hate the click bait title. Cue the people who have no context of this vehicle in Europe ridiculing Lexus into the ground.

Maybe this will be the most popular vehicle worldwide than the RX in time?

Within the markets it launches I would assume so.

Speaking of which, any Chinese language speakers or residents able to translate news websites in the region? I'm really interested to see if any information on the other Asian countries has leaked?

I'm just hoping one of which is a right-hand drive market or the prospect of an import 10 years down the line is soured for me.

The prospect of an import is probably impossible anyway considering the value these things are sitting at - is depreciation big on them in China?
What the LM might be competing with in China;

Don't know if its a direct competitor but the Buick GL8 Avenir going for the same luxury feeling/customer. Buick is recognized as a strong luxury brand in China. No partition, no true executive seating done like the LM

And here is the MB V Class. Starring Roger Federer

I think LM competea against Toyota's own Alphard and Vellfire. TBH in Europe you can't tell the difference from Vito and V.

Read what I wrote above. The LM competes against the Mercedes S-Class Maybach, Maseratti Quattroporte, Bentley Flying Spur, and Range Rover Autobiography. A LM buyer will never consider a GL8 Avenir or a V-Class.

The gear shifting is still the old one, why not getting the newer ones?

The driver area in general is so out of line with the ES, LC, UX and LS interior aesthetic that it's embarassing.

It's basically launching with a 3+ year old cockpit.

So much want for a 2nd gen before this one has even launched.
That's because in China cockpits are strictly for chauffeurs. People need to stop judging this thing as if it were going on sale in this form in NA/Europe.
The LM's looks is very well received in its primary market. So far media coverage has been overwhelmingly positive about this product, except the usual joke that this 'bread car' will have a $100k+ markup. Yes, we also have stereotypes about minivans in China and we do joke about them being not classy.

Around 200k USD including all the top options and markups included from what I hear.
I’m surprised there is a stigma against these vans in China if they can also be so high value.

Anyway, don’t think much of that rendered white one.

Also, Ian, I appreciate that opinion but let’s be real here, it was easier to slightly alter the dash design rather than do a ground up one in their latest interior language.

Chinese love these, it is positive stigma.

I also like new short gear sticks and that is very easy change.

This is exactly what I want to know — has the reaction to the LM has been positive in China?

Who are the tastemakers and the elite in the Chinese automotive media? Have they commented on the LM?

Thanks to the great success of Toyota Alphard in China, most Chinese media saw that LM’s first reaction was “in order to buy LM, how much you need to pay extra to the dealer”.
In China, the official price of Toyota Alphard is about 800,000 yuan, but the actual transaction price needs to be paid an additional 300,000 to 400,000 yuan.
