Video: Lexus LS Semi-Autonomous Driving Demonstration

Lexus LS Ultrasonic Blue

This is some very cool stuff — the Nikkei newspaper in Japan has a first look at the semi-autonomous technology in the new Lexus LS:

There’s a demonstration of pedestrian collison avoidance and the lane change assist, along with a brief look at the new Front Cross Traffic Alert can be seen on the Heads Up Display:

It’s not all safety either — this is the first appearance of the LS F SPORT in what looks to be Ultrasonic Blue, and we also get to see a new wheel design:

That blue!

The technology! The colours! Didn't think I could want one more than I already did,but I stand corrected!
That blue is amazing, and the tech definitely looks the part.
Nice to see some more footage of the car in motion!

Could not agree more. A-pillar back screams Model S from the front 1/4 view. Love the new LS exterior design and USB suits it so well!
Really look forward to seeing this kind of semi-autonomous features appear in more Lexus models down the road. The blue certainly has caught my attention before reading the title.

Thanks Krew for sharing the video. Lots of tech.. it makes head up display more useful than before. I like the timing when the system takes the action. The intervention would not come too early while trusting the driver's judgement.

I just can't get over that blue:heart_eyes::heart_eyes::heart_eyes:

I dont see what all the ooh'ing and aah'ing is all about?!? That blue is nothing special. All car makers have that colour, but under a different name of course.
Cool seeing the car in motion. Not really sure what I think of the design.
L
Yes. The color is nothing special and seen before. The new LS just looks pretty damn great in it. That's what people are commenting on.

That is indeed a very nice use of the HUD ! And boy that color really fits the car !!
but to be honest the fact that Lexus had the ability to do all that but cant make a new infotainment system is really sad.
The entire industry is in denial about infotainment, tbh. Even the most highly rated OEM systems are still extremely clunky compared to modern phones, and many of them are still too proud to admit defeat and let your phone handle it (CarPlay/Android Auto).

More than just Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, I saw a new concept by Google that integrates Android into the whole vehicle, not just the infotainment system. So it controls the whole car, with Google Assistant to voice control everything, and OEMs can modify it to their needs. A lot better IMO than anything on the market since the rest of the car is consistent with the infotainment, and Android User Interface is a lot cleaner and simpler than most OEM UIs. An Android Phone isn't needed as it is the "operating system" of the car.

Hans Grimmel? Any way he said he was extremely impressed with the autobots feature. I want to know more about it and what makes it so impressive compared to others. #Curious

I'd want there to be very good barriers between this and any actual car control (steering, brakes, acceleration, engine start/stop, etc). Android's big selling point other than being free is that it's trivially "rootable", at which point even modestly skilled people can (and regularly do) make the device do whatever they want.
