Photo: The Original Lexus RX

This Wednesday, the fourth-generation Lexus RX will make its debut at the New York Auto Show. This gives us just the right amount of time to look back at the previous models — starting with the original 1999 RX 300.

(Amazing to think what RX 300 kicked off, it was the best-selling model in the Lexus lineup right from the start.)

"Once you own a Lexus you'll regret it if you ever own anything else!" - agreed RAL. To support your statement and my sentiments about it, I drove a Nissan GT-R for just over two years and recently traded it in, so as to regain the refinement and service that I had grown accustomed to when driving different Lexus models for many more years before. As a prior owner of a super car that was loads of fun to drive under the right conditions, but disappointed me in the areas of build quality and the service experience, my current conviction is to remain with the brand that has served me the best. Apart from the LF-A, which I can't afford (yet), buying a Lexus F will sufficiently satisfy my urge for performance, along with an all-round package that few can compete with.

Reminiscing my dad's cousin's '99 RX and how much in awe I was when I was taken in it for a ride! And it was my first ever ride in a Lexus! The few I still see on the road are virtually rust-free, a testament to the exceptional build quality despite our salt-laden Canadian winters.

At the beginning Lexus was just a Mercedes-Benz rip-off. Now it has its identity.

Compare the 1RX to the ml and x5 and you see how graceful the Lexus ages.
