2013 Lexus GS Night View System

Here’s the first photo I’ve seen of the 2013 Lexus GS’ Night View feature, courtesy of Lexus Norway:

From my understanding, the (optional) Night View system works by projecting infrared light from the headlights, which is then captured by a camera located in the rearview mirror — this black & white footage is then displayed on the central navigation screen. Very cool.

When you get a chance, find out if you can do this without the lights on!

Technically, you shouldn't be moving with the lights off if it's dark enough for you to be using 'night vision'

I have tried the system and it only works if the headlights are on. I did notice that Lexus states that Night View utilizes LEDs to radiate NEAR INFRA-RED LIGHT so I do wonder if it is ACTUAL infra-red light. Nevertheless, tried the system and it is pretty cool. Not sure how much attention you can put on the screen while driving though.

Pity it seems to be black and white only. BMW is a bit more innovative and offers night vision in color.

Who gives a flying fcuk if its colored or b&w. Does it work properly and is it efficient enough to distinguish living things/objects. Sadly some drivers are still garbage no matter how much technology you pack in a vehicle. #truth

Of course a night vision system that works properly is sufficient. However, isn't the very definition of luxury having more than is sufficient? Therefore, shouldn't Lexus as a luxury brand offer the best possible tech?

At least in Europe you can'T combine the night view with the lane keep assist. Interesting. Might have some legal reasons for Toyota not wanting to be sued for crazy people driving at high speed with no other vision than the 12 inch screen at "full auto pilot" mode with lane keeping and adaptive cruise.

Would be scary if you're driving in the boonies and you see nothing ahead but you look at the screen and saw human figures :S

How long before they incorporate night vision with the heads up display?  Seems like the next logical step.

I can confirm that Night View only works at night -- not sure what "the SAME can" means, though.

My night view system is focused to low. You can only see a short distance (30 feet) in front of the vehicle.  Can it be adjusted up to give a better view?
