Well, the high-riding, four-door coupe isn't going away, no matter how much we beg, plead, kick, or scream. In fact, it's doing the absolute opposite of going away. The segment is growing, and the latest member of this jack-of-all-trades body style is the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class Coupe.

Surprises? Well, um, there aren't really any. Mercedes has been hinting at the GLC Coupe since it showed a thinly veiled concept, and unsurprisingly, the production model isn't a far cry from that neon-yellow crossover. From the firewall forward, there's the same handsome face of the standard GLC-Class. But like the GLE Coupe, this particular variant gets a much swoopier, aggressive rear that draws inspiration from the S-Class Coupe for its taillights. The narrow, wraparound units are topped by thin chrome strips and a duck-billed rear deck. It's not practical, but based on these images, it looks better executed than its rival the BMW X4.

Underhood arrangements are just as predictable as the GLC Coupe's appearance. The base model gets a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder with 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, while the GLC43 will do battle against the X4 M40i with a 3.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V6 that's good for 362 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are paired with Mercedes' new 9G-Tronic automatic transmission and 4Matic all-wheel-drive systems. Again, just like the normal GLC.

The GLC Coupe will hit dealers in early 2017. Look for more on Mercedes' newest as the New York Auto Show festivities continue.

I've never understood these SUV/coupe things. Seems like they are popular enough and are selling though. I agree that this does look better than the X4 as well.

Its not for me but obviously people are buying these. The fact is yes there are people that want a "coupe" that sits high like a SUV. I can't blame Benz for adding this and expanding their product line. Since its already based on existing stuff and they jack the price up, it has to be more profitable.

Was ugly when BMW built it. Was fugly when Acura built it. I've run out of derogatory adjectives. Damn. :poop:

Thankfully it looks better than BMW (X6) and Acura (ZDX), and in the US it will easily sell better than both too.

Yeah, a little....not much. It at least avoids the Acura's parrot-beak. But, for big guys my size banging their heads getting in and out of the rear seat (and sitting with my chin resting on my knees LOL), I'd probably want to avoid all three.

Try getting into the back seat of a Verano, lol (if that is even possible). The Acura ZDX had more problems than just a parrot beak for sure, and near zero long term US sales as proof. ZDX approaches Asstec styling, it was that bad.

The Mercedes GLC will have more rear legroom and headroom than ZDX (and Verano too). And it will easily outsell ZDX and X6 combined in US market (not that hard to do). The expensive GLE is already selling surprisingly well.

Oh, I agree that the Verano has a Munchkin rear seat. But I'm never IN it....and I rarely carry others in back. So, frankly, from my prospective, I don't care. But mid-size SUVs often ARE bought to carry more than just two people up front....so their rear-seat dimensions are of considerably more importance.

No, the Aztek certainly didn't win any beauty contests, and its assembly quality could not compare to any Acura product. But it was definitely roomier inside than the ZDX, especially in back.

Agreed that both the ZDX and X6 were sales flops, though lately I've been seeing a few more X6s in my area (just a few, though LOL). Mercedes seeks to be on somewhat of a roll lately, so, yes, the GLC might outsell them both. The question is how much....we'll see. Like I said in an earlier post, the GLE is not quite as bad-looking as the ADX and X6.....the looks alone might give sit a little more of a sales factor.

.

NOT TRUE for this coupe class of mid-sized SUV, these are used primarily to carry ONLY 2 people. They are purchased by people like me that rarely use back seat, but GLC still has a far more usable backseat than a Verano for example for occasional use.

Note: Most owners are NEVER IN their backseat, duh. And some Veranos get backseat usage, primarily as rentals.

So then, if they usually aren't, why should they care? I think you are making a mountain out of a molehill. And, to quote what you often say, this thread is also not about Veranos, but the GLC.

Not sure why you even brought up rear seat room for GLC, not even a related issue. A non-issue. Glad to see you are paying some attention now to topic...

Well, I was linking it to the design. Droop-rear vehicles, in general, (though not necessarily all) tend to be crunch-time in the rear seat for larger persons. If one only carries kids or small adults in back, though, then you're right.....it's not a terribly important issue.

However, I have not reviewed or sat inside a GLC yet.......so I'll save any more comments in that department for an actual close-up (and I admit I've seen a couple of vehicles that had more rear headroom than I expected for a droop-roof). One thing, though, is interesting on the actual name......I once owned a Mazda GLC, though that was several decades ago. M-B might (?) have had to buy the rights to use that name from Mazda, unless the statute of limitations (if applicable) on the copyright expired. I say "if applicable" because I'm not a lawyer and don't know all the details of copyright law.

(One more reason, IMO, to get away from Alphabet-Soup.........on that I'll agree with you LOL)

I literally remember not being able to sit in the ZDX rear. I could not fit inside the rear door. I can fit in the back of a 911 or FRS but this car was so poorly designed it was basically for dogs back there. A shocker since they make the Honda Fit so amazing with usability.

When I first saw the ZDX at the D.C. Auto Show (out on the floor, unlocked), after banging my head and contorting myself like a pretzel in the rear seat, I un-shoehorned myself out of it and simply walked away without saying anything to the reps.....I was that disgusted (though I'm not normally a rude person).

Seriously...I really hope the GLC does a better job than that. It does, of course have the advantage of somewhat newer technology and design.
