New EV sports experience where driver and car are one

The times may change, but Honda’s love of sports is, and will always be its identity. As we head towards the era of electrified cars, the Honda Sports EV Concept proposes a one-ness between driver and car, never experienced before. Built upon an EV-specific platform, this concept model is equipped with a highly responsive electric power unit in a easy to handle compact body. Powerful, smooth acceleration are coupled with a serene quietness thanks to its electric motor, and a low center of gravity realize exciting maneuverability, beckoning the driver and car as one into a completely new experience. With “Honda Automated Network Assistant” using Honda’s AI technology, the Honda Sports EV Concept aims to create communication that unites the driver and car. Aiming for the next generation of sports car design, the low and wide design takes its sports car looks a step further: the unforgettable styling, a friendly front fascia that naturally blends in with any lifestyle, and rich and supple surfaces bring happiness and a even a fondness in ownership.

I love it, actually. It looks to me like a 21st-century take on American Motors' AMX.

For the uninitiated and those too young to remember this (most of you, I'm sure), this was spunky but near-broke American Motors' (née Rambler's) somewhat tongue-in-cheek attempt to compete with the Chevrolet Corvette. They simply took their Mustang/Camaro/Challenger pony car segment entry, the Javelin, lopped a foot off the wheelbase and ditched the back seat, and produced the original, 2-passenger AMX during the 1968-1970 model years.

Honda Sports EV Concept: Should They Build It?

Honda seems to have the right idea on how to make an electric car, judging by their second attempt with the Sports EV concept.

Following the really handsome Urban EV concept that debuted at the last Frankfurt Motor Show, the new Sports EV concept retains the clean look of its sibling, only now it throws some classic sports-car proportions into the mix.

The concept is about the same size with the Mazda MX-5 and features a long bonnet and a cabin that sits closer to the rear axle while adopting a sloping roofline that meets the rear end in true Jaguar-E-Type style.

Sadly Honda didn’t reveal the technical details of their new concept, saying only that the Sports EV combines “a highly responsive electric power unit” with an “easy to handle compact body”.

There’s also a “Honda Automated Network Assistant” onboard that’s based on AI technology in order to create a better connection between the driver and the car. Honda is currently developing a new dedicated EV platform which will underpin the company’s upcoming electric models, with the first one being the production version of the Urban EV concept in 2019.

Having the platform ready and waiting means that the chances of actually seeing the Sports EV concept reaching production are quite good, with rumors talking about a launch around 2020. If you want a cool electric alternative to the Miata, this might be your lucky day.

The AMX is my favorite 60s muscle car that nobody knows, and this new Honda looks like an AMX crossed with Eve from Wall-E.
