Looks like BMW decided to partially-drop its big-buck 6-series coupe, in the American market, in favor of the upcoming 8-series.There was some talk of it, but some of it wasn't clear. Road and Track magazine did a write-up on some of the known details.

Here's something that totally flew under our radar–BMW has stopped building the 6-Series coupe. You can still get a 2018 6-Series Gran Coupe and convertible, but quietly, the classic two-door hardtop has disappeared from the lineup. The 6er Coupe isn't quite dead, however, since you can still find a new one for sale.

Note: 2015 BMW M6 Competition Package pictured above.

A BMW spokesperson confirmed to Road & Track that the 6-Series coupe silently went out of production in February. Currently, it's unclear if BMW has any intention of bringing the 6-Series Coupe back.

Last year, we reported that BMW plans on killing off the 6-Series lineup in favor of a new revival of the 8-Series nameplate. Since then, camouflaged 8-Series test mules in both coupe and convertible bodystyles have been spied during cold-weather testing. Interestingly, there's a rumor that the 6-Series name could live on for a successor to the outgoing 5-Series GT hatchback.

BMW doesn't report the sales percentage for each 6-Series, but generally speaking, there's not much of a market for pure coupes anymore. That's why BMW and its German rivals, Audi and Mercedes-Benz, are so keen on offering four-door "coupes."

We hope the 6-Series coupe will make a comeback, but we're not too optimistic about its prospects. Hopefully the 8-Series will fill the void.

Makes sense to me with BWW "grand coupes"/4 door fastbacks selling fairly well, and regular 6 series 2 door coupe selling poorly.

What wasn't mentioned by BMW (of course) is the relative sales successes of expensive Mercedes 2 door "classic" coupes (S and E classes) and Audi 2 door "classic" coupes (A5/S5).

Mercedes, a least to some extent, has taken over the superb chassis/suspension/steering engineering that, up until a few years ago, was exclusive pretty much to BMW and Porsche. (Audi has also shown remarkable improvement in recent years). That's also at least partly because BMW willingly gave up a good part of it to chase after mass-market, rather than enthusiast, sales.

My opinion on the 6 series coupe topic is more simple:

BMW 6 series coupe is less attractive. Unlike Mercedes and Audi mid-sized/large coupes that have very good styling.

A properly done large sport coupe is a desirable and somewhat extravagant vehicle, a lucrative niche.

Agreed on two counts. First, the 6-series is indeed not one of BMW's better-looking products, and second, the large-coupe market has indeed become a niche. That's probably why we don't currently see a Buick Riviera, Lincoln Mark-series, or Cadillac Eldorado in this country.

Yeah out the 3 the 6 GC is my least favorite. Audi is killing it in the segment Mercedes started. We sell a ton of wheels to S7 and RS7 owners...
