With the 2016 Volvo XC90, the first model based on Volvo's modular SPA platform, now in showrooms all across the country, attention turns to the next SPA-based model in the works, a new flagship sedan reviving the S90 nameplate. The car replaces the aging S80 in Volvo’s lineup and will be revealed online later today.

We already know what the S90 will look like, however, as official shots have made their way onto the web via Autoblog.nl. Photos of a scale model were also previously posted on Car News China and revealed most of the design. We also had our own spy shots of prototypes spotted in the wild.

The look is reminiscent of the sleek Concept Coupe from the 2013 thanks to elements like the Thor’s Hammer daytime running lights integrated with the headlights, as well as the C-shaped tail-lights. It's a handsome look and should help the car combat rival luxury mid-size sedans like the Audi A6 and BMW 5-Series.

Most of the S90’s mechanicals are shared with the XC90, including powertrains. For the United States, this means T6 and T8 variants, the latter coming with a plug-in hybrid setup delivering 400 horsepower. The T6 should be good for 316 horsepower. An eight-speed automatic transmission will be fitted across the range. The layout and materials of the interior are also borrowed from the XC90.

The new XC90 and S90 are just the first steps in Volvo’s plans to overhaul most of its lineup with SPA-based models over the coming years. Look for new versions of the S60, V60 and XC60 as well as a V90 model replacing the current V70/XC70. Volvo will also introduce a range of compact cars using a second modular platform, the CMA, developed with parent company Geely.

The Volvo S90 makes its official debut at next month’s 2016 Detroit Auto Show.

The new Volvo S90 is based on the scalable architecture that debuted with the XC90, which means many of the powertrains will be shared with the large SUV.

The cabin follows the same spirit, with a tablet-like infotainment screen dominating the dashboard and Volvo’s new interior approach which eliminates most of the physical buttons in favor of a cleaner look.

Thanks to the extensive leaks, we know for sure that Volvo is also prepping an estate version of the S90 as well, which will be traditionally called V90.

The new Volvo is expected to make its official debut later in the day.

Interesting styling, Audi-ish profile. I like the fastback roofline but the kinks in the rear pillar area is a bit of a mess.

Thanks for the posts, Gecko and Mike. :) Volvo has needed a real flagship sedan for some time. The S80, IMO, didn't really cut it against the Germans. The big question will be if the S90 can boost sagging U.S. sales.

Agree on the interesting styling part. The grille actually looks a little more Jaguar than Audi. I know some like the fastback rooflines (I sometimes refer to them as Humpback-Whale LOL)...but, to me, they just restrict rear headroom and make entry/exit more difficult for tall people. Nice interior. Volvo has always done light-colored matte wood trims well (such as Birchwood), and this seems to be no exception. I suspect an (eventual) sport-package version would use brushed-aluminum or carbon-fiber instead. I also like the idea of an executive version the company is planning.....that will help to further increase its potential.

I really like it for the most part. The rear end is okay, not great, but not ugly. The weakest part for me is the interior front dash. It's too minimal and plain for the segment the S90 is in. Otherwise I love the rest of the interior. The door trim, the front and rear seats, the wood trim, it all looks great! My favorite part is the front end, looks very classy and elegant while still looking fairly original. I don't get an Audi vibe at all from the front. I immediately got a Swedish vibe from the front, due to the unique Volvo "hammerhead" headlamp lighting element shape. The front dash is heavily touch-screen based, very minimal buttons. Not my preference, but the XC90 interior is virtually the same in that sense.
