Lexus to Debut “Overtrail Project” at Tokyo Outdoor Show

Lexus will have a vehicle showcase at this year’s Tokyo Outdoor Show, which is running alongside the Tokyo Auto Salon. Let’s see what the press release says:

Toward achieving a carbon-neutral society, and based on its desire to deliver outdoor experiences that help people understand, enjoy, and protect nature, Lexus will promote its “Overtrail Project”, which offers the fun of vehicles that enhance outdoor lifestyles while coexisting with nature and provides various outdoor experiences.

So, I’m not really sure what to expect — the accompanying photo has been intentionally blacked out, despite obviously being an RX:

Lexus has been fascinated with glamping/offroad in North America for some time, and it’s encouraging to see some experimentation in the Japanese market — curious if this is a one-off concept or the debut of an actual OEM accessory line.

Whatever this previews.. expect it to be featured heavily on the GX. From the initial rumours that the GX will be taking on a lifestyle/overlanding direction, and to now Lexus focusing more and more on lifestyle/overlanding SEMA builds, and now previewing potential accessory options, everything points towards that direction.

What it means is using the hybrid battery to power electronics and tools and heating. Ford has been advertising this feature heavily with the F-150 hybrid, as well as other electric truck brands. They will also possibly offer branded accessories like solar panels and extra power banks and lighting strips. They already do that in Australia and that's a very profitable business.

Because emergency power is a very useful feature in Japan, JDM Toyota and Lexus hybrids all come with 1500W inverter even on the Yaris. This is not standard on international models. Notably the Tundra only had a 400W inverter that turned out to be a disappointment since the F-150 hybrid has a 7kW inverter.

Hopefully after all this off-road/overlanding/trail stuff, they’ll get back on track.
