Rendered: The Next-Generation Lexus IS Sedan

Renderings of the next-generation Lexus IS are a favorite of the Japanese automotive press — this attempt by (a currently unknown) magazine was posted yesterday by a Lexus fan on Instagram:

Lexus IS Rear Next-Generation

The differences between this photochop and the existing model are minimal — the only changes are with the front and rear bumpers, making this rendering seem more like a mid-cycle refresh. That said, the design of the current IS sedan has never been a weakness, and maintaining some consistency across generations would not be a bad move.

The magazine mentions a 2021 release along with some preliminary dimensions:

Lexus IS Dimensions Next-Generation

Compared to the current model, the next-generation IS length and wheelbase would grow by 4cm, with all other measurements staying the same. Also mentioned is a 2.5L engine with 181 horsepower, which makes absolutely no sense and I’m choosing to ignore.

I think I've (we've) got our eyes set out for the 4IS hybrid model (likely with the smallest displacement because we are always budget conscious) especially if the F Sport model for that can come with AVS and variable steering.

I know the 3IS is a very competent vehicle but I prefer at least a hybrid (really want a sedan BEV) to justify the capital outlay, lol. We'll see once we find out more about the 4IS and whether it will have a lot more to offer compared to a used 3IS 350 F Sport with AVS/ variable steering since buying used will mean almost like 10 years of fuel savings (10-15k miles/year) as oppose to buying new.

I cannot wait to see the same multi stage hybrid system (8GR-FXS) in the LC, in the 4IS!! It will blow the competition away. The economy achiveable and the power without the high tax (company) will be a huge hit. IMHO the 4IS is going to be a more important product over the LS, LC and ES. RWD/AWD with more displacement choices, more attractive hybrid power trains, more luxury and sport appeal, more capable car overall and with a much bigger market then models already mentioned, could potentially seriously draw in much, much more customers!

Will it be using GA-L platform from current LS / LC?

Probably, unless it uses the closely-related GA-N from the latest Toyota Crown.

Somebody went to the wiki page and edited it on Aug 26th to show the 2019 IS using the TNGA-L platform. Is this accurate?

Depends on who did the Wikipedia editing. If it's a knowledgeable insider such as Carmaker1 or a Lexus insider, then, yes, I'd say it's credible. Also, those dates on the Wikipedia article are calendar year, NOT model year. Thus, by 2019 they mean calendar year (2020 model year).

On the other hand, the most recent information posted by @Carmaker1 on these forums suggests that the 4th-gen IS will enter production in July 2020 as a 2021 model year vehicle.
