Lexus ES F SPORT Aimed at Younger Audience


Lexus vice-president of marketing Cooper Ericksen discussed the addition of the ES F SPORT model with David E. Zoia of WardsAuto:

“Every car that we introduce, we’re trying to have a version that is more appealing to a younger customer. We feel based on the styling, technology and driving dynamics of that car that it’s going to bring a little bit of a new customer into the ES – and that is going to be a younger customer to the ES line.”

Take rates on F Sport models reach as high as 95% on the RC coupe, Ericksen says. About 40% of IS sedan buyers opt for the F Sport, and initial estimates are as many as 20% of ES sales could go to the performance model.

The ES will rely heavily on value as a primary selling point, as the car is sized like a mid-size sedan but targets the entry-level luxury market — Lexus considers the Cadillac ATS, Acura TLX, Infiniti Q50, BMW 3-Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class as core competitors:

“In other brands you have to go to a higher price point to get that much room,” Ericksen says, pointing out the ES now offers more legroom than the larger LS sedan. “We have every indication we are going to continue to have a great conquest vehicle on our hands.”

Finally, WardsAuto breaks down global ES sales and the importance of China to the model’s success:

Viewed globally, the new ES appears even more critical to the future of the 30-year-old luxury brand, now sold in 90 countries. Although the U.S. is the No.1 Lexus market worldwide with sales of 305,132 vehicles in 2017, more ES sedans are sold in China than anywhere else. Last year, ES deliveries totaled 60,000 units there, about 10,000 more than in the U.S., accounting for 45% of the 132,000 Lexus vehicles sold in China.

Why are they not showing regular interior trim in the US press release? That F-sport interior looks barren. How are they "redefining luxury" when they show an interior that is not luxurious at all? Someone is not doing their job properly. Show some wood!

The global version looks good.
I assume they want to focus on the first ever F-Sport. Also if you read the press release the F-Sport debuts an all new trim inspired by Samurai Swords. They are going to really push this ES in a different direction than ones in the past.

That is not true at all. AWD is a small take of sales and mostly in the NE region of the US

What engine is in "ES 260"?
A25A-FKS. It does have 30hp more compared to the outgoing ES250. So I guess "260" is justified. It aims squarely at the E260L, that's very obvious.

Also, Lexus registered the "ES260" trademark in China last November. Apparently I missed that.

Someone brought up a good point in the now locked speculation thread. Maybe no AWD at launch is to milk every last bit from current gen IS and GS. The only reason these still sell in meaningful numbers is that current generation ES has no AWD.
Definitely, they wouldn't replace a RWD/AWD GS with a FWD ES, it goes against the sportier image they are trying to get

It's for chinese domestic market only, where they do arbitrary numbering all the time. "260" sounds much better than "250". The rest of the world will still use the ES250 name. The two are identical.

It really bugs me how little interior detail they are showing, but somehow they feel compelled to put an image of the brake disk on there (and it's just a generic brake disk!). What are the PR people smoking?
^If Avalon reviews are any indication, hybrid will surely be the car to get. Many testers have noted that real world performance feels similar between hybrid and V6, but the hybrid doesn't seem to have bad torque steer... plus 44 MPG.

Wish they'd used real-world photos for the exterior, though they still look good. Curiously it also has a rear spoiler. Thought the spoiler is just an F-Sport thing. Hopefully it's optional.


Not an ideal photo opportunity during the reveal, wasn’t able to capture much.

Plus side, I did spend quite a bit of time with the standard and F SPORT, and we have a lot to be excited about. More soon!

The F sport version doesn’t do ES the justice. Too sporty. Thank God, Lexus do still have the luxury version for ES. Any full shot of the rear?

The ES260 is only marketed in China. It has the same engine as the ES250 marketed elsewhere. 250 in China is an Internet slang for "half crazy"/silly, so they avoided using that number only in China.

Aha, forgot to mention that. The "250"s had been selling here for a decade. It's so obvious that it's funny how their marketing department missed this so long.
What an absolute disappointment. I really hope they don't kill off the GS as this car will not be able to fill the shoes of both vehicles. Australians don't even get the F-sport. We just get the hybrid in either luxury or sports luxury trim levels. The V6 is only a smidge more powerful than the camry and Avalon and less powerful than the GS. which makes sense. This is FWD only.

Please don't kill of the GS...oh please oh please...

Nah.. they are simply reacting to the derogatory nickname the ES250 had been given by some Chinese people. Lexus just didn't realize that when they first marketed the 250 in China.

I honestly don't think ES will replace GS anytime soon
It's still a very typical ES, its FWD, it still shares platform with its Toyota sibling.
It doesn't feel very "upscale" either. The interior design and parts used are closer to the UX, which is meant to be a model to drive sales more than a status symbol like LS / LC. Yes its going to be better than its predecessor in every category, undeniably. The newly introduced f sport trim looks quite cool, but we all know its more of a appearance package than under hood changes.
There's going to be some cost cutting here and there and share parts to keep the price low. The ES will still be an ES.
I still have hope for GS, and I'm pretty sure once @carmaker gets more info, he will be the first to post them here.

It's not the prime reason for sure, but the ES250 also happens to be the worst selling ES. Lexus sells more 300h than 250.
Love the interior
The overhang is awful, 3rd rear side from c pillar and trunk looks a lot like a Camry
& Still no AWD version , Nissan make it for Altima !!!!

It will be available with one (!) single, 215 hp hybrid powertrain with NO AWD option and NO estate version, in a segment, where all of its rivals (My local dealer said this is indeed, to replace the GS), the 5 series, E-class and the A6 are all offering: Estate version, AWD along with more powerful engine options. Come on. I know it doesn't make too much sense to have a 350 hp daily driver, and it's ok if you don't want to play along the rules of the playing field, but then it's also ok not expect significant sales numbers. This thing is DOA in Europe.

Did you really think they will make a wagon ES? To sell like 500 of them?

Lexus EU sells only hybrids, it is 98% of their sales... thats how good IS 2.0t and NX 2.0t are selling, they are in 2%.

A good looking sedan. I suppose it will eventually come with a more powerful hybrid version too. A wagon version, I wouldn't mind but highly doubt Lexus would do it, since sales figures for Lexus ES wagon would be very, very small. Yes BMW, MB, Volvo have them, but they are BMW, MB and Volvo, and have wagon versions since decades, difficult to find a spot in that market segment.
