Tesla beat analysts' first-quarter earnings expectations Wednesday as it continued to ramp up sales of its electric sedans and prepared the for the launch of its new electric crossover.

Tesla reported losing $45 million, or 36 cents a share, on an adjusted basis, better than the consensus estimate of 50 cents a share. The loss came on $1.1 billion in revenue, slightly better than expected.

The loss compares to $50 million, or 40 cents a share, in the same quarter last year.

On an unadjusted basis, the loss was $154 million, or $1.22 a share. Tesla said the loss includes $22 million, or 17 cents a share, in unrealized losses from foreign currency holdings due to the strong dollar.

Tesla shares closed Wednesday at $230.43, down $2.52 or 1.08%. But shares rose $6.13, or 2.66%, in after-hours trading to $236.70.

The electric-car maker says it saw "growing" demand for the Model S sedan, the only car that it has been delivering, in North America and Europe. Tesla delivered 10,045 cars during the quarter and predicted it would be able to produce 12,500 in the second quarter.

Tesla reaffirmed its promised to deliver 55,000 vehicles this year between both its Model S electric sedan and its Model X electric crossover. The Model X could arrive late in the third quarter.

Besides its electric cars, Tesla announced last week that it is also going to venture into home and business battery units.

On a conference call with analysts after the earnings report, Musk said that demand for the company's new home, business and utility batteries has been so "crazy" since they were announced last week that the company is looking at expanding the ability to produce the units at the battery "Gigafactory" under construction outside Reno.

Musk says that in less than a week since the announcement, the company has 38,000 orders for the home wall unit. He says the Gigafactory could be put into nothing but stationary battery production (i.e. not auto batteries) and be kept fully busy.
