And we’d be lying if we didn’t say it also looked similar to the Lexus LS fuel cell test vehicle our spy photographers spotted last July. The interior looks identical, too, including the gold trim on the dashboard.

There better be a hell of an LS planned if they're dumping interiors like this into the mirai.

You dont start targeting Porsche and then half assing everything.

urgh, LS has half assed interior? As to the article itself, obviously it was never a LS mule, it was Mirai. And Mirai has nice interior, nowhere close to the LS interior though.

Obviously not saying the LS has a half assed interior. But the gap should be enormous between the two.

Front bumper is a bit different. It will be interesting to see how the car looks in final spec.

I don't understand what's 'half-assed' about LS interior either. Just look at that massive ugly vent. Such an inelegant element never belongs on the LS. The Mirai interior looks good on the computer screen but it won't come close to the LS.

The LS interior already surpasses Porsche. It's on the same level as the S-Class Maybach. They don't need any more effort on interior to target Porsche.

2021 Toyota Mirai Makes Spy Debut Looking As Sleek As The Concept

That would be 14 months after the Toyota Mirai Concept had its world premiere at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. Exactly one year after, in October 2020, the Toyota Mirai has made its first appearance as a test prototype.

Our photographers caught a lightly-camouflaged 2021 Mirai tester that proves the production model will stay true to the elegant, sleek styling of the Mirai Concept unveiled a year ago. Only the front and rear ends are covered by black tape, albeit not entirely.

The second-generation Mirai leaves behind the awkward styling of the first generation model, looking more similar to newer sedans like the Toyota Avalon and Lexus ES. It’s easy to see the production model will look virtually identical with the concept, and the same thing is expected to happen inside. Expect the cabin to feature a digital instrument cluster, a large central touchscreen, soft surfaces clad in leather, a wireless smartphone charger, and a 14-speaker JBL audio system.

The 2021 Mirai will be longer, wider and lower than its predecessor, with these changes dictated not only by the new styling direction, but also by the switch to Toyota’s premium rear-wheel-drive TNGA platform.

More importantly, the 2021 Mirai will debut Toyota’s latest hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric drivetrain enabling a targeted 30 percent greater range than the current model. More specifically, the second-generation Toyota Mirai could be capable of covering more than 400 miles (643 km) on a single tank.

In addition, the new powertrain is expected to give the new Mirai improved acceleration and performance. The switch to the modular RWD platform with a 5.5-in (140-mm) longer wheelbase will also result in a superior driving experience and improved passenger comfort. The 2021 Toyota Mirai will go on sale in late 2020, initially in Japan, North America and Europe.

But seriously, why are Toyota and Lexus struggling with such long, outrageous looking front overhangs, especially on RWD vehicles? There is no reason for this car to have 20" of plastic and metal hanging after the front axle. Same for the LS 500. WTF?

Ridiculously long front overhangs especially in RWD is an industry trend. Just look at the overall length-to-wheelbase ratio. On average a full size luxury sedan has grown 25 cm in overall length compared to a decade ago but the wheelbase only grew by 10 cm. Car designers today always choose style over function (packaging and practicality) and Lexus is the worst offender.

What's funny is that these days transverse FWD vehicles typically have a smaller length-to-wheelbase ratio, i.e. shorter overhangs, even smaller than offroad SUVs (the RAV4 actually has shorter overhangs than the 4Runner).

As I've said before 1920kg with just 128kW is why they don't sell this as a Lexus. To do that they need to somehow package two stacks into the chassis.

The real improvement here is efficiency. With 16% more hydrogen capacity they now get 30% longer range.

but anyway, it's amazing starting point
this's really a new future, made me remembering the first days of Insight & Prius and how many articles i read about this is innovative but it will fail and won't be a future prove

i don't know how anyone from those wrote those articles in the past will do or is doing after nearly 30 years of Hybrid excellence

same doubt happened with the first generation Chevy VOLT and the Plug-In until it start selling well , then all start bashing the Prius and parsing the VOLT

the H2 will get it's way by time because it's the real only future prove tech

It's far from being proven future tech. To be a viable ICE replacement they need major material breakthroughs in hydrogen storage. Vastly cheaper carbon fiber manufacturing technique is required to make tens of millions of FCV tanks. And there's still no commercial Clathrate extraction operations and no commercial carbon capture process that reduces emissions of methane reforming to zero.

Also I wonder if Mirai2 has a 2-Stage compressor. The compressor draws very little power during normal driving but needs a lot of power at full power. This makes a single-stage design highly inefficient since it normally operates at a few percent of its full capacity.

In terms of technological hurdles, FCVs are about at a similar place as BEVs.

FCV is facing a lot If headwinds and I feel Toyota isn't going at a satisfactory pace. Even their BEV program will proceed a lot faster.

I watched the videos and I feel GA-N is such a poorly packaged platform. Look at that meager legroom and headroom and that huge central tunnel (occupied by the tank). The guy is 168cm (5 ft 6) tall and he barely fits in the second row. With a 2920mm wheelbase it feels more cramped than the 2700mm wheelbase Corolla sedan.

There's no way a GA-N based GS can be remotely as comfortable as the GA-K based ES, and a GA-N IS would have a RC-like second row which would be completely unusable. The S220 Crown is barely roomier than the 3IS despite having 12 cm of extra wheelbase. By comparison the ES is roomier than even the LWB versions of BBA competitors.

And if you look at the view of the bare chassis, the packaging is now much worse than Mirai 1 due to the switch to RWD. There is a huge amount of space between the rear seats and rear trunk occupied by the traction battery and motor. The FC stack now occupies the entire engine bay instead of integrated in the floor. And there are three hydrogen tanks stored in really awkward ways in the floor that made it a 4-seater.

FC stack: 37L/56kg -> 29L/32kg, 114kW -> 128kW. Power density is up 40% (3.1kW/L -> 4.4kW/L) and specific power is up 100% (2kW/kg ->4kW/kg). Amount of expensive platinum catalyst used is reduced by 58%.
H2 tank: capacity 4.6kg -> 5.6 kg (up 22%), storage efficiency (amount of hydrogen/weight of tank) 5.7% -> 6.0% (up 5.3%)
The time of manufacturing of individual cells is reduced from 10 minutes to several seconds! The time of manufacturing for tanks is reduced by 66%.
Hydrogen fuel economy improved by 10% combined with 22% more capacity gives 33% longer range.
Overall I'm very impressed with their progress in individual components, but underwhelmed by the execution of the assembled product.
