No fewer than five hybrid vehicles will be launched between 2022 and 2025, along with five plug-in hybrids and three purely electric cars. These products will largely target the domestic market Japan, as well as Europe, the United States, China, and the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) region. Mild-hybrid powertrains, which are already available for select models, will continue as the entry point into the electrified Mazda lineup.

SKYACTIV EV Scalable Architecture is the official name of what will be Mazda's first platform dedicated to electric vehicles. It will be inaugurated on a production model in 2025 and will serve as the foundation for several vehicles of various sizes and body styles scheduled to come out until the end of the decade.

I find it interesting that the pictures of the hybrid and plug-in hybrid underbodies show a RWD powertrain.

Questions I have for Mazda:
  1. Assuming that Mazda will be using its own M Hybrid mild hybrid system, which is a 24-volt system (rather than the now more common 48-volt mild hybrid system), why did it see the need to use the little resources it has to develop this expensive (but not the very efficient) system when it could have bought an already-developed 48-volt system or used a free full hybrid system (provided by Toyota)?
  2. Is the SkyActiv EV Scalable Architecture the brand name that Mazda is using for its version of the eTNGA platform it will share with Toyota?

1) The 24V system is a band-aid solution for Skyactiv-X falling short on its efficiency targets. When Mazda developed Skyactiv-X, they were benchmarking against emissions and fuel economy standards of 2010. Someone in Mazda corporate was clearly delusional to believe their pure ICEV could match CO2 emissions of a HEV. Now Skyactiv-X is already so expensive they could not afford a full hybrid setup.
