Toyota has announced an expanded safety recall affecting certain 2024 Lexus LX 600 and GX 550 models, along with the Toyota Tundra pickup. This recall extends a previous recall from from May 2024 but now includes additional model years and the Lexus GX 550, which uses the same 3.4L twin-turbo V6 engine.

They are still saying it's machining debris rather than admitting a design flaw.

The V35 needs to be replaced by a different 6-cylinder engine ASAP.
The news gets worse and worse regarding this engine. There first fix apparently didn't work.

They might as well just use that new V8 across more models. Making it exclusive to the GR GT is a foolish decision. The GR GT isn’t something justifies locking such an important powertrain behind a single halo model.

Toyota is trying way too hard to package the GR GT as some kind of modern day LFA successor or ultra special “LFA level” supercar. Consumers aren’t stupid and we shouldn’t have to pay for Akio’s overly romanticized vision and ego project at the expense of the broader Lexus lineup.

No. Hot-V twin-turbo V8s are very expensive to build. GM's Black Wing V8 was cancelled after just 2000 built because it cost them over $20000 per engine. You will never see that kind of engine in a mainstream pickup truck. The cheapest car with this engine configuration used to be the M550i.

And these engines tend to run very hot because of the tight packaging. Not good for towing/offroading (the Discovery OCTA survived Dakar because it was detuned by over 1/3).

Well since this engine was in testing way back in early 2010's and knowing toyota it probably isn't a design but more of a compliance flaw this engine was never meant for thinner oils like the 0w20 it was designed for 5w30 and statistics show there have been less problems in other parts of the world compared to the US because of less stringent emission laws for UAE the spec sheet states all the way upto 5w40 but i guess 5w30 is probably the best option for this motor given the power and heat generation not to mention the newer bearings are made of metal whereas the 3ur had polymer bearings which although plastic were bullet proof

Toyota should just license and use the B58 at this point. They already gave it full approval for the Supra, and we know that it's more than capable of being used for BOF duty in the Ineos Grenadier. Even JLR swallowed their pride and used the N63 for the Range Rover.

The B58 had to be detuned to 286PS/450N.m to reach the Grenadier's durability target. That's just slightly higher than the T24. There's no proof that the B58 can reach the same target with a 415PS/650N.m tune. In fact, I would say it's very unlikely it has better reliability than the V35 at that output level.

Have any GX550 owners received any info from your dealers or Lexus directly about this recall? My Lexus app still says no active recall, but I have never gone in for this engine recall....
