We'll see how well (or bad) that goes for them.

Honda introduced their next gen i-MMD/e:HEV hybrid system, and it still doesn't have the power split device/eCVT that makes Toyota's type of series-parallel hybrid so efficient and flexible.

What about Renault and Mitsubishi?

Renault saved Nissan in 1999. And Nissan saved Mitsubishi in 2016. What happens to Renault and Mitsubishi if Honda and Nissan merge? Are they left alone and out of the merger, perhaps left to find other saviours?

Renault and Nissan (and lately Mitsubishi) are in an alliance, sharing platforms, technologies and even a CEO (Carlos Ghosn). This alliance (and Mr. Ghosn) is credited with having saved Nissan in 1999; Renault and Nissan traded shares but remained independent.

Nissan bought just over a third of Mitsubishi's shares in 2016, saving Mitsubishi. In Japan, owning one-third of shares is enough to attain and maintain control of a company; it is how Ford was able to keep Mazda afloat for so many years without owning a majority proportion of shares. Nissan a subsequently sold some of those shares, likely losing control of Mitsubishi.

In the earlier news of this agreement to study a merger, I saw nothing about Mitsubishi but later news items include Mitsubishi.

Curiously absent from the joint press releases are Renault and Mitsubishi. Both companies formed a strategic partnership with Nissan way back in 1999, and Renault is presently Nissan's main shareholder. In a very brief announcement, Renault Group acknowledged the new MOU and stated it would "consider all options based on the best interest of the Group and its stakeholders."

Mitsubishi is considerably more involved. The company announced it had also signed a MOU with Nissan and Honda, but only to "explore the possibility of Mitsubishi Motors' participation, involvement, and synergy sharing" in this new holding company. A decision should come by late January 2025. In November, Nissan announced it was selling one-third of its stake in Mitsubishi.

More and more companies will merge, resulting in less competition and higher prices.

Been thinking about what this might mean for Infiniti and Acura, and I'm not sure I have a clear answer yet but an Acura version of the QX80 sure would be enough to shut down the necessity of the entire Infiniti brand since it's their only compelling product. Beef up Acura, scrap Infiniti?

I think they'd be ingenious enough to able to make room for both brands.

Apparently, Mitsubishi isn't joining this merger, scared that this merger might cause them to lose management control over their own company.

I wonder how much longer can Mitsubishi scrape by when their attention is mainly focused on the Southeast Asian market. Sure, the population in this region is a decent size, but the purchasing power has never been that strong to begin with and in recent years it has become even weaker.

Really feels like they have accepted that they are just a zombie brand and have give up on any sort of ambition.

In other words the other two don't want them with their management on board. They just want their brand and tech. And I don't blame them. On the other side Nissan has managed to make their Rogue worse than Outlander, and to make it even worse Outlander was a rush job that had platform change in the middle of the development.

Honda has significant problems. Sales were down a whopping 4.6% last year. Nissan only .8%. I tire of the honda fanboy media acting like honda is some perfect angel savior and Nissan doesn’t have a lot to offer.

From what I've seen, the ones that still think Honda is doing great is mainly the US and the country bumpkins in my country that "aspires" to own Honda's econoboxes, bruh 🥴

Apparently, Honda and Nissan's merger talks are starting to fall apart. Originally, the plan is to merger together to form a holding company, but then it turned into Honda wanting to turn Nissan into their subsidiary, and unsurprisingly Nissan is not ok this.

These other companies' failings make Toyota's live even easier lol.

As much as I like Toyota, other companies falling flat on their face tends to get Toyota complacent. Look at Lexus for example...

Competition is good.

There already is no competition in Japan as two of the biggest sellers are now part of Toyota Group.

Toyota knows their biggest threats are Chinese companies and they are only concerned about these. Honda and Nissan are just afterthought.

I assume you mean Suzuki and Mazda?

You're definitely right here, it's just that Japan would fare better if they had more OEMs that are strong instead of one.

Neither Suzuki nor Mazda are part of the Toyota Group. The only three automakers in the Group are Toyota, Daihatsu and Hino. Not even Subaru is part of the Group.

Toyota owns about 5% in each of Suzuki and Mazda (and they in turn own equivalent numbers of shares in Toyota -- but a much smaller proportion due Toyota's size) and Toyota owns about 20% of Subaru. They all, however, remain independent. Mazda would rather die than become part of Toyota.

Toyota sees its role as big brother keeping the smaller automakers viable without direct control.
