I always thought the basic requirement for lane keep assist was EPS, is this a fallacy or are hydraulic systems able to be equipped with Lane Keep Assist?

I dont think so. The J300 uses a combination of hydraulic and Electronic power steering, to operate lane keep Assist function. please correct me if i am wrong.

The J300 does hydraulic only for base models, while the upper trims have a power steering motor...dont know how this functions.

^^ This set-up does not allow LTA/LKA since the steering input is still mechanical. The J300 repair manual is behind a paywall so we'll have to wait for Toyota Club to give us the details. But my guess is the main difference is the steering linkage where one is mechanical and the other is electronic, but everything below the linkage are traditional hydraulic systems. From the V35A-FTS Type 21 diagram, the hydraulic pump is driven by the engine (#9 on the diagram is the hydraulic pump pulley, it's absent on the LS500 with EPS).
