Well, with the ever-growing market for car-based SUVs, and especially the market for upmarket/premium ones, I guess it's not surprising that the Italians have now decided to jump in with an Alfa Romeo. Of course, Fiat already has ownership rights to all of the Dodge and Jeep SUVs. This would not be (quite) the first time that the Italians introduced a car-based AWD vehicle to the American market. The small Fiat 500X was recently introduced, which shares a basic platform with the Jeep Renegade. But an Alfa-nameplate SUV would be the first one from an Italian upmarket brand, and, like the Porsche SUVs, would have once been considered unthinkable.

What other color, of course, to display it in than bright Italian Red. :) ;)

Just released by Car and Driver today;

http://blog.caranddriver.com/alfa-romeo-suv-coming-in-2016-says-sergio/

Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne has big plans for Alfa Romeo. The boss wants eight new models in the Alfa lineup by 2018, including a wagon and a crossover based on the new Giulia sedan. Turns out Sergio is serious about that SUV: He says the preproduction work is complete, and the model will go into production by mid-2016.

This report comes to us from The Detroit Free Press, which quotes Marchionne as saying the company has spent nearly 2 billion euro, or roughly $2.2 billion, on preparation for the SUV. “That involves effectively the industrialization on the first car, the architecture, the engines and effectively all the prep work in connection with the launch of the second vehicle, which is coming at the end of the first half, beginning of the second half of 2016,” Marchionne told the paper.

In that quote, Marchionne refers to the Giulia sedan as “the first car,” meaning the first of the planned eight new models in the Alfa lineup. The as-yet-unnamed SUV, which we’ve speculatively rendered above, would be the second of the new vehicles.

The ambitious plan is to boost Alfa Romeo’s global sales to more than 400,000 vehicles annually by 2018, 150,000 of which would come from the U.S. market. As of right now, the Alfa Romeo 4C is the brand’s only vehicle on sale in the U.S., having moved just 295 units in this country so far this year, The Detroit Free Pressreports. Production on the Giulia sport sedan is slated to begin late this year, with an on-sale date in early 2016.

Not surprising indeed. The SUV surge continues. How long will it last? Which brands/models will be caught joining the trend too late? Should be interesting.

Wow, way to go Alfa Romeo.

My guess is they think Europe has plenty of room for SUV growth, being later to the SUV-buying party...

Outside of a few manufacturers that deal exclusively in exotic, mega-luxury, or supercars, I can't think of a single one in the U.S. market today that doesn't have SOME kind of SUV (or more than one SUV) either in production, in a concept stage, or about to be introduced. Even Jaguar and Bentley have done SUV concepts.

Europe's SUV market is considerably different though. It remains to be seen how this will do there. From the rendering it looks more midsize than a small CUV/SUV.

Yes, certainly no guarantees of getting anywhere close to US SUV adoption rate, even with differences in sizing and fuel efficiency demands. Very different market, but also at a earlier stage.

From what I understand, it is derived from the Alfa Giulietta platform, which is the same platform for the Dodge Dart compact sedan.

Here's the Giulietta. You can see the similarities except for the wheels, ride-height, 4 doors, reworked headlights, and lower-front end.
