I still remember reading some European auto magazines that conducted tests of Prius 1 against diesel cars to dismiss hybrids as a viable carbon reducing technology, because EU since 1998 was heavily invested in "clean diesel". Well now we know the clean diesel initiative was poisoning European citizens for two decades with emissions cheating traceable all the way back to 2003.

That's the problem of government picking winners based on industrial interest groups instead of letting all technologies develop and evolve in a freely competing fashion. We are seeing the exact same thing today. Will it end well? We won't know until 20 years in the future.
