It seems similar to some low cost CN products from NetlL or upcoming ram 1500. Wonder if toyota will ignore this setup?

EREVs scale best at bigger size/weight. They make more sense for big SUVs and trucks but not so much for mid size or smaller.

I don't know what's the progress on the free piston linear generator Toyota has been developing since 2014. I think they will stay away from EREVs until FPLGs become commercially viable. You could consider their "Practical BEV" a middle ground between PHEVs and EREVs.

The main advantage with PHEVs is the ICE can drive the wheels directly. This means the "three electrics" can all be downsized compared to EREVs.

practically will these engines will have to be more optimized then simply dumping one of their existing ice engines on a bev?
